I really, really do. Theyre an unnecessary time waster, they interrupt momentum that could be directed toward more pressing tasks, there are many more innovative methods these days for communicating information, and the people who actually LIKE the meetings do everything they can to pad them out to the inconvenience of others.
I know Im not alone in this. Im sure there are many others in my office who also dislike meetings. Im thinking of identifying these people and scheduling a time where we can all sit down together and share our thoughts and feelings. Im considering reserving a conference room for this, and sending out emails to all concerned letting them know about this event. Ill create an agenda that lists all the aspects we want to discuss about our aversion to meetings. Well ask someone to write down everything that is said, and later send these notes out to all participants to review in advance of an additional gathering. Additions or subtractions to this list of concerns will be submitted ahead of time so that the group can decide to accept or deny them. Maybe theres even a book available that lists out rules of order that we can follow.
Oh wait

(3,275 posts)My old job used to have a meeting every week. It was boring but there were always doughnuts except one week when they brought in a veggie tray instead.

(70,676 posts)That said, I had to go to meetings at least monthly for over 30 years of work. Have been done with that for 20. Now I'm a member of 3 or so organizations without going to any of their meetings, continuing to pay up on dues. Iow, paying not to go to meetings.

(16,376 posts)There was a 10-year period when I had to take minutes for as many as ten meetings a week. It seemed to me that attendees said the same thing over and over again, just in different ways. Most meeting shouldn't have lasted more than ten minutes, but would drag on for an hour. You are so right about padding. Plus, often the meetings ended with a resolution to have another meeting about something that was raised in the first meeting.
