2. Gas
Fri Jul 20, 2018, 04:01 PM
Jul 2018

I used to shut off my car at stoplights. It takes 7 seconds worth of gas to start a car. If you are going to be sitting there longer than 7 seconds it worth it to shut it off. I have a hybrid now that does that for me.

Unless I'm going on a long trip I never have more than 1/2 a tank of gas. Gas weighs 6 pounds per gallon so having a full tank means you are carting around extra weight.

The fuel pump burned out not long after I bought it (it was five years old then) and the mechanic told me that the fuel pump in that vehicle was cooled by the gas around it in the tank. If the tank is less than half full the fuel pump is not sufficiently cooled.

Since the danged truck has a forty gallon tank that means topping it off regularly when we use it. But it gets 13 mph whether we're driving it completely empty or the truck is full pulling a packed horse trailer, so I doubt that extra 240 pounds of gas make any difference!

It takes a mere fraction of a second on either end and it has been working great for years. You hardly notice.

Apparently Americans don't like that sort of thing.

I don't wear 'em unless I must, like going to the doctor's office or working in the yard in shorts ... I suppose if I like, jogged or biked ... I'd wear 'em ...

I'd expect ladies feel different for themselves, but as a dude ... meh. I hate underwear. Probably worn them like 40 times in the last 15 years ...

One costs just $2 ~ $3 at a sewing supply store and they are useful for opening packages with shrinkwrap, as a boxcutter, a tiny scraper, even as a screwdriver for eyeglasses. I've even dug lime out of the waterhole sprayers in the dishwasher with one.

1) If you only use half of an avocado, you çan store the other half in a glass of water in the fridge to keep it from turning brown.

2) To test the freshness of an egg, put it in a bowl of water. The freshest eggs will sink to the bottom, laying on their sides. Less fresh but still usable eggs will sit on the bottom upright or tilted to the side. (These are good for hard boiled eggs.) If an egg floats without touching the bottom, it's gone bad.

3) You really don't need cook lasagna noodles before you assemble the lasagna in the pan. Just add water to your sauce, making it runny instead of thick. The excess water will be absorbed while baking, cooking the noodles.

4) If your shower head is clogged, fill a plastic bag with white vinegar and rubber band it on to the shower head. Leave it overnight and any calcium deposits clogging the shower head should be dissolved.

5) Place a wooden spoon over a boiling pot of water to keep it from boiling over.

6) To slow the ripening of bananas, wrap the stems in plastic wrap. I usually just use the plastic produce bag from the store. Then just cut off the bananas when you want to use them.

7) Wall calendars don't have enough room to write stuff in the daily boxes? Use Post-Its! While desktop planners and calendars on my smart phone are great, I like to have sonething on the wall that's IN MY FACE! It's especially good for chores or appointments you have on a weekly or monthly basis, because you can reuse the Post-Its. They're also good for breaking a big project down to smaller pieces. When you do the task, you can move the Post-It to your "Done it" wall to remind you of your accomplishment. There are actually a lot of good ideas on the Post-It website.

Now, I also have kept those loose socks before I started doing this and every now and then, that missing sock turns up.

Back in college, I learned that it was rust and not my facial hair that ruins blades quickly.

I've mentioned this to some people and I get the "what-you-didn't-know-that? look, and I've mentioned it to others who were as skeptical of it as I was until we tried it.
