Man when the Sister kick in it's just ... spirtual, man.

I now just cranked that shit and rocked the hell out. My mormon neighbors likely aren't pleased, but ... sry ...

Reminded me ... that is SO FREAKING EPIC right there. Whole movie's awesome but this is the coup de gras, and without doubt one of the most powerful live perfs ever ...

but it might have had a special resonance for a black gospel group with an edgy blues and electric guitar tendency

The Staples Singers started in the late 40s and by the fifties they'd had several recording contracts and some real road trip experience, including tours of the deep South where they couldn't eat or sleep wherever they wanted

I pulled in to Nazareth feeling bout half past dead
I just need some place where I can lay my head
"Hey, mister, can you tell me where a man might find a bed?"
He just grinned and shook my hand. "No" was all he said

I think often they slept in the car. The world can be an ugly place

I saw Carmen and the Devil walking side by side
I said "Hey Carmen, come on! let's go downtown!"
And she said, "I gotta go but my friend can stick around"

They eventually provided some soundtrack for the civil rights movement. So I wonder what Pops Staples had in mind for his cameo

Go down, Miss Moses: there's nothin you can say
It's just ole Luke, and Luke's waitin on Judgement Day

And it ends with Fanny:

You know she's the only one who sent me here with her regards for everyone

The singer's little 'uhhh-huuuuh' at the end of her verse, man ... I mean the whole thing is amazing but when she bust that out ... it seriously makes my eye's well up. She just ... NAILS IT ...

And I love the symbolism of the (small) gospel choir on this song, it's always been a gospel hymnal with heavy southern black church influence.

They're just perfect on this ... and the whole thing perfect. So friggin' good.
