I use "whitening" toothpaste and mouthwash. I use the strips but hate them and they only help marginally. And my teeth are old so I guess this is just what happens to you. I go to the dentist regularly but he doesn't do whitening.

(6,084 posts)you can buy every toothpaste possible and strips, and lightening with a light in your mouth and it won't work
the only thing that does is the expensive dentist treatment

(2,380 posts)I have to use them two or three days in a row. Not sure that's recommended, but that's what I do.

(12,344 posts)There is a simple whitening method you do at home. The dentist makes a plastic mold of your teeth. You put gel in the mold and wear it for 30 minutes every day for two weeks.

(6,568 posts)Then, you want to pull out a mini-angle grinder for those stubborn stains. I've found an engraving gun to work good in those hard to reach places.
Oh, and to get that shine back when you're done, a couple coats of Rustoleum Gloss clear coat followed by some light buffing with #0000 steel wool.
A little bleeding is normal.

(20,178 posts)You can lighten your enamel, but as you get older and it gets thinner, the yellow dentin shows through.

(12,153 posts)I was taken aback when I read this on the box of one I just bought:
Crest Gum Detoxify
Fluoride Toothpaste For Anticavity and Antigigivitis
Neutralizes plaque bacteria, even around the gun line
Active Ingredient
Stannous flouride (0.454%)
Products containing stannous fluoride may produce surface staining of the teeth
adequate toothbrushing may help prevent these stains which are not permanent or harmful and may be removed by your dentist
this Crest is specially formulated to help prevent staining
see your dentist regularly

(63,905 posts)is it just the detoxify type?
frogmarch
(12,153 posts)if yours says it contains stannous fluoride, it may stain too.

(32,969 posts)I drink ALOT of decaf tea & 2 am cups of coffee. I noticed that the caffeine stains lightened when I switched to a power toothbrush.
And I use & reuse a straw to drink the tea.
Have you researched charcoal toothpaste? I have no first person experience with this, but I've noticed adverts for that.

(1,765 posts)1st my dentist said you can use any whitening or enamel toothpaste but using an electric toothbrush and flossing is the most important first step.
I also use this charcoal natural toothpaste at night. Sometimes I use it alone and sometimes I want a "minty" taste so I mix this and my regular mint toothpaste. This stuff is AMAZING!

Charcoal is all natural and draws out toxins from both your teeth and gums.
