Back in the early 90s I was in England and had a tour of the Tower of London. The guide was explaining how the condemned were brought there and beheaded. They would give the executioner a gold coin to make sure that he did the job quickly and painlessly.
The guide explained It was a form of medieval tipping, but nowadays they might call it....severance pay.
