Arlo Guthrie came to our part of Cape Cod (Truro) last night. Last time, he was solo. This time, he had his daughter (on mandolin and guitar) and his son (on keyboards and bass keyboard) plus a friend doing percussion. Absolutely brilliant!
He did a perfect mix of his father's songs, his own, and even Stevie Goodman's classic that was a big hit for Arlo (City of New Orleans) once upon a time. His daughter had a few tunes of her own, and Arlo let her do several of them.
AND--for the first time since I've seen him perform, he actually did Alice's Restaurant!! He had pretty much stopped doing that for a while, and finally decided to put it back in his live program. He said, "some of you might remember this. I certainly remember it. If I had known it was going to be popular, I definitely would have made it shorter!"
And so, from who knows how far away in the summer night, a few hundred people could be heard singing as loud as they could, "You can get anything you want at Alice's restaurant!"
Now, almost 50 years after Woodstock, Arlo Guthrie still puts on a great show. I would say there were smiles from coast to coast, but in Truro, Massachusetts, being near the tip of a narrow peninsula, that means all of six miles.

(18,672 posts)I saw him over 10 years ago in down town Salt Lake where they put on free concerts in the summer. He was amazing as ever and we had a blast! Never seen so much tie dye in my life. It was glorious!

I've loved Arlo Guthrie since I was a kid. Did he play the Motorsickle Song?
He did play it last year, though!
