Just got my cats back from the vet

I had them there for a long weekend because we were out of town. They’ve been there a bunch of times over our vacations. They come back fine- a bit miffed but they settle back in quickly. Since they were due for an exam and their feline leukemia vaccine, I had them do those while they were boarded.

My female cat has been bouncing off the walls. I fed her dinner and then let her outside for a few minutes. She came right back in and rolled around on her back for a few minutes until I submitted my hand for a quick scratch after a belly rub.

My male cat has been lethargic. He looks gaunt - dehydrated maybe. His eyes look different- more slanted. He wouldn’t eat his dinner or any treats. He’s usually a voracious eater, frequently finishing her meal when he’s done.

He just had bloody diarrhea I’ll call them first thing, but you’d think they’d say something about him not eating/drinking/pooping properly. He also was covered in something- I assume he heaved or something. It’s like he got slobbered on by a dog- his fur is unkempt.

I’m both worried and upset. He’s still not comfy- he’s hiding behind a curtain in our room. It’s where he goes when he wants to flee from our female kitty.

missing your male's issues but not a vet office. I hope everything is OK.

Is he an outdoor cat? If not, you might consider skipping that vaccine in the future. Feline leukemia requires close contact with an infected cat for transmission. It isn't airborne.

they had the vaccine on Friday morning and I picked them up Monday late afternoon.

He’s indoor/outdoor (mouse control so we keep him wormed) so he needs the vaccine. They did check for the disease (and kitty AIDS) when hey ran the blood work just to be sure.

has reactions to vaccines so they give her Benadryl before giving her a shot. Hope your kitty is better soon. I just came back from being gone almost two weeks. A friend came once a day to take care of my cats. I would much rather do this than leave then somewhere. I've boarded cats before and they just don't seem to do as well away from home. Do you have someone you trust that would do this for you the next time? Will be reciprocating for this same friend with her cats in a few weeks.

I took him to the vet and they did x-rays to check for a blockage as well as blood tests (all came out excellent- his blood work showed nothing was amiss.) We had to wait for a fecal sample but they ran that a day ago and no parasites.

The X-rays did show inflammation in the stomach and his intestines were spasming but other than that... no real explanation. They rehydrated him and gave him something there for his stomach but he wouldn’t take meds at home - and usually he’s quite good about that.

He mostly nibbled dry food all week until last night. He seems to be nearly back to his usual appetite but maybe down just a bit. He does eat treats!

But yeah, he lost a solid pound as of Monday and probably a bit more thru the week. He’s happier though so I think he’ll be fine!

Next time we go for a long weekend, I’m just going to put out a bunch of dry kibble all over the house and let them eat what they want.
