The Finns shouldn't be giving anybody advice about drinking, much less solitary drinking. Finland ranks #16 in alcohol consumption per capita; for comparison, the US is # 48. I think it's those long winter nights and depressing movies.

Finland's' overall rate is just 2% higher then the US as a whole. 14.2 to 12.6.

In case no ones told you yet, hygge is having a moment.
Well, was having a moment. Because once you learn the word the Finns have in store for you, you'll be grabbing a wine bottle and leaving hygge behind.

In case you skipped 2016, hygge (pronounced hoo-gah) is a Danish word for the concept of finding coziness in everyday living, suddenly celebrated everywhere from the pages of The New Yorker to cookbooks, gift guides and social media.

Now, though, Finland has upped the ante. The countrys Ministry of Foreign Affairs just introduced us to a word aptly describing life in 2017: Kalsarikannit (pronounced cal-sar-y-cuhn-eet), defined as the feeling when you are going to get drunk home alone in your underwear with no intention of going out.

On the rare occasions when Mrs. Aristus is out of town, I order a pizza, crack a bottle of something strong, watch some good movies, and get plotzed off my ass. It's really cathartic...
