I have no idea why. She drinks with her head upside down and sometimes gets water in her nose.

Even though they have separate dishes, the big male eats first, while the others stand back and watch. Then the young male, then the ladies, in order of age. Each cat sticks to their own dish.

After that initial ritual, it is fair game. Throughout the day, they then "raid" each other's dishes, without much conflict. My oldest (18 year old) female will sometimes lay across her dish so the others can't get to it.

Sort of a depressing pecking order, but conflict is rare. And my intervention is not useful.

My two cats fight over who gets to sleep in the bathroom sink. But they get their water from their water fountain.

Nope, indoor is the way to go. Perhaps if you changed the litter in the litter box you wouldn't have such difficulties.
