Any of you old NYC club hoppers remember the Limelight nightclub?

It use to be a church. Then it was a notorious nightclub. Then it was a Marketplace. Now? It's a gym.

The New York Limelight originally started as a disco and rock club. In the 1990s, it became a prominent place to hear techno, goth, and industrial music. It earned the media's attention in 1996, when club kid and party promoter Michael Alig was arrested and later convicted for the killing and dismemberment of Angel Melendez, a fellow member of the Club Kids and a drug dealer who frequented the club.[9] The 2003 biopic Party Monster, starring Macaulay Culkin and Seth Green, was based on this event. The Limelight was closed by the police, and subsequently reopened several times during the 1990s. In September 2003, it reopened under the name "Avalon"; however, it closed its doors permanently in 2007.[10] Since May, 2010, the building has been in use as the Limelight Marketplace, but in 2014 it was converted into an outlet of the David Barton Gym chain. On December 21, 2016, this location as well as all four other David Barton Gym locations in NYC abruptly closed their door for business. In June 2017 it Reopened as Limelight Fitness.

Used to shoot craps in the men's bathroom. Get high. Dance. Have fun. I've talked about it before on DU. I was a regular at the Atlanta Limelight.

on the right side speaker on the dance floor. Or the bathroom. lol

That was a long time ago though. The only thing I climb on now is my bed and I do my dancing in the kitchen.

Basketball players or Prince or anything but that was always going on . But the reg floor was great . Great Halloween parties plus then those sports players would be in the dance crowd and even though masked they stood out of the crowd because of size be it tall, big , or wide .

5am close time downtown great taco place down the street. The building has to be something now because it was a very old historical building but I can't think of it . It was exczlibur for awhile Those people on exhibit they mention was memorable, again, esp at Halloween

Chicago location Edit
The Limelight in Chicago was housed in the former home of the Chicago Historical Society; the building itself is a historic structure. It was opened in 1985, and became Excalibur nightclub in 1989.[6] The steps to the entrance led to a hallway lined with museum cases which housed carnival like models dancing and generally moving about. There were several levels to the club. The main dance floor had a stage for the DJ. There were several private rooms that often played host to a bevy of celebrities both in music and in sports. The alternative music scene was critical at the Limelight as it played late into the 5 a.m. hour in Chicago on Saturday nights.

I can't judge

There is still a lot of clubbing Chicago now I'm not just in touch .
Stuff is happening just not with me . So many scenes here I know NYC must be too
I did make it to lollapalooza music fest this year and a lot of people were handing out after concert club cards for different places , because it was a younger crowd, but ,I am sure not places for me now at all !!

They had a giant screen that they were playing videos on. For some reason, I'll never forget the fact that they were playing the Pointer Sisters' current hit on that screen. Of course, it was very loud and very crowded.

Interesting topic.
