The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI turn 60 next Thursday and I'm doing a movie binge-athon all day
I have never seen Casablanca, believe it or not, so it's first on my list. I also have never seen Citizen Kane. I have Amazon Prime which includes movies, and I'm also going to raid Google Movies.
Any other suggestions ? I do prefer color over black and white and newer over later, but if it's a classic older movie, I'm open to it. They don't have to be comedies but nothing really sad, please.
I see my older brother the next day, so that will be wonderful. He lives 4 hours away.
Suggestions ? Thank you very much in advance!
Steve

(5,914 posts)It's not color, but it is a classic, one-of-a-kind western. It was a direct reaction to the Hollywood blacklists of the Joseph McCarthy era. It pissed off a lot of people.

(69,523 posts)Some people these days see Citizen Kane and just shrug, wondering what all the shouting is about. That's not an invalid observation; but they're watching the film in a completely different context than the original audience for the film.
Everything that made the film innovative for the time, rapid cuts and scene changes, montages, overlapping dialogue, deep-focus cinematography, are all common coin today, and don't make the impression on us that they did to audiences in 1941. Watch with an open mind. Forget the hype - THE GREATEST AMERICAN FILM OF ALL TIME!!! and just watch it on its own merits. It still holds up.

(6,881 posts)A Thousand Clowns is a lost little gem you never see any more. Local Hero though has always been one of those films everyone says it's cool to like but never really could. Even watched it again to see what I was missing and found it even harder to find.
Rhiannon12866
(231,280 posts)I agree the characters are quirky and unusual, but that's what I like about it. It's clever and unlike anything else, not something we see all that much these days. And in 1984 when I bought my VCR, I was allowed to pick one free movie and "Local Hero" was my choice. I've been to Scotland and Ireland, loved it there so that's probably why I liked it.
Snellius
(6,881 posts)Thousand Clowns may be the sweetest, most human love story that affirms that love is always worth the risks. Especially in a "love is dead" age. Maybe that's why no one ever sees it anymore.
Scotland must be wonderful. Magical. Mystical. I'd love to go there and watch Local Hero again. The scene with the Northern Lights, though, blows you away further than 2001.
Rhiannon12866
(231,280 posts)It seems like they remake everything these days, but this one was dependent on a group of very unique actors - including Barbara Harris.
And I first went to Ireland and Scotland as a teenager with a group from my summer camp - to ride horses. I was so taken with it that I didn't want to leave. Five of us are lifelong friends and we're getting together at the end of the summer - and there'll be horses. It's been awhile, LOL, and I'm a little apprehensive, I'm not exactly a teenager anymore...

(6,881 posts)Hope you have a wonderful trip. Don't know if you can ever recapture such magical moments in life, first born, first high, first love, first kiss. Always tell myself to come to anything different with new eyes. Not let the past blind you to new experiences, to what's to see never seen before. But that's not possible. So maybe to try to fit the past and what comes together to widen the adventure of discovering ourselves. Each person is the only world they can ever really know. Your trip sounds so exciting. With horses and all.

(23,417 posts)I turned 60 a couple of weeks ago so happy birthday to both of us!
On a lark, I did something similar to your plan. I watched the Oscar winners for films released in 1958, (the awards ceremony was in March, 1959).
Best Picture, Best Director, Best Song and Best Score: Vincent Minnelli's GIGI (Alan Jay Lerner and Andre Previn)
Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress: David Niven and Wendy Hiller in SEPARATE TABLES
Best Actress: Susan Hayward in I WANT TO LIVE!
Best Supporting Actor: Burl Ives in THE BIG COUNTRY
Best Original Screenplay: THE DEFIANT ONES by Nedrick Young and Harold Jacob Smith
It took some time to find a couple of these but it was fun nonetheless!
Want to feel really old? When we were born, there were only 48 stars on the U.S. flag!

(5,373 posts)The responses you've gotten have given great suggestions. As for my 2 cents worth; if you like drama, I would suggest "Lion in Winter" and on a much lighter note, Mel Brooks' "History of the World" and one of my all time favorites, "Bringing Down the House" with Steve Martin and Queen Latifah. Enjoy!!!
