Another reason Cohen is an idiot

During his court appearance yesterday, the judge had a question for Cohen:

But when the judge asked whether he had had any medication or alcohol in the last 24 hours — “What have you taken or consumed, sir?”

“Last night at dinner, I had a glass of Glenlivet 12 on the rocks,” Mr. Cohen said, drawing laughs from the spectator gallery. It was not his usual custom to do that, he added.

This jerk put ice into a glass of Glenlivet 12?! He ruined a good single-malt whisky by diluting it with ice?!

Loser.

What's stupid is bragging about a 28 dollar bottle of scotch.

Now if he said he did a dram of blue label....

I sometimes put ice in whiskey. Good whiskey is proofed higher than it needs to be specifically so that it's still good over ice. With a relatively cheaper whiskey like that one, you aren't going to get a lot of subtle aromas anyway.

Not sure what you’re drinking, but I haven’t seen whiskey go for much less. Glenlivet 12 is produced in bulk and mass marketed. You can find it in just about any dive bar.

A 750 ml bottle, what we used to call a fifth, is anywhere from $40-50. That is considerably more than most bar brands.
Most bars pour a drink of Glenlivet for about twice whatever their bar brand is if you don’t specify what brand you want.

But I’ve never seen it that expensive. It’s a $30 bottle not on sale around here at the discount stores and maybe $5 more at other places.

House hootch at most bars is rot gut. I suspect there plenty of up scale bars that serve it as their house scotch which doesn’t say much really.

A generally available top shelf bourbon or scotch is going to be $80-100 with harder to find stuff going considerably north in price.

But..............I consider the cheap scotch to be Cutty Sark, J&B, Dewars, etc., while the single malts are usually at least 50-100% more than those.

I just poured a nice glass of Glenmorangie, so I’m too mellow now to continue the debate
(not the way I drink the god stuff)

Prices for booze tend to be cheaper in Texas. Some places have higher taxes which drive the price up. So I’m not doubting those may be the prices where you are.

My point is just that Glenlivet 12 is not a top shelf product. That doesn’t mean it’s bad or there isn’t stuff that’s lower quality.

I have one at home that's 92 proof, Ardbeg, aged 10 years.

If you like the smoke this is an exceptional whisky, though it's up there at $60 a bottle.

My everyday is black label, I really like the complexity of the blend.

Someday I hope to try blue label.

That’s pretty much the bottom point by which you can either add water or ice and still have something decent. Makers Mark tried proofing to 84 and there was basically a customer revolt so they abandoned the idea at least with their domestic product.

His advice was drink it the way you like it. “Why would you spend your money on something you enjoy, and then let others tell you how to have it?”

I don’t consider whiskey with ice or water a cocktail.

There is something to be said for drinking a really good whiskey neat, but for every day stuff water or ice isn’t a bad way to go, especially with food or an after work drink.

Their consensus was that ice would ‘diminish’ the taste, but they all suggested that you put at least a dash of water in it to unlock the flavors or something.
