The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsA question I've never seen in the Lounge: Make-up advice.
Okay, I need a make-up foundation that will not break the bank. I've got all the clown paint figured out, but I'm at that age where you need to start with a moisturizer, then spackling that won't crack, and then foundation that won't melt on a hot day.
Anyone have advice that won't put me in the three digit financial bracket?

(4,112 posts)(58) I use good-quality mineral make-up, usually Bare Escentuals Bare Minerals. It runs about $25 for a pot, but it lasts for months because you only use a very small amount, applied with a brush. I buy about one pot every six or seven months. Good coverage, and doesn't create cakey lines as long as you use a good moisturizer (or primer) and a quality brush.

(31,517 posts)It's moisturizer and sunscreen with a little bit of color. It doesn't feel greasy or heavy on the skin. I use a separate moisturizer before I apply this.
I'm 70+, dry skin, wrinkles with a fair complexion.

(25,858 posts)They often know a lot.
You could also consider going to an Ulta Beauty store if you have one near you, and ask them to help you. They carry everything, including the bargain brands.
There must be other chains out there like Ulta. The people who work in those places probably do not get commission (I could be wrong here) and won't be as motivated to sell you expensive stuff, unlike the ones who work at the cosmetic counters in the department stores.
Not sure what you mean by spackling. But if what you're currently using is cracking, then you are probably using far too much.
I put on my moisturizer immediately after I get out of the shower, so there's humidity in the bathroom, which helps it be a bit more effective. I also use two different moisturizers, because my skin is very dry and I live in a dry climate. I should actually re-moisturize a couple of times during the day, but I don't bother.

It consists of a liquid base with a high oil content (think: moisturizer) with blended pigments to suit your natural skin tone. So, with that much oil, does it leave your face shiny? NO! The pigments, when correctly suspended in the liquid, provide a matte finish that stays in place for 18 hours. No kidding (I lived and worked in Houston much of the last 30 years). And the best part? It doesn't look like great make-up, it looks like great skin! And you don't have to apply it like spackling. A thin film is all you need to last all day. That one ounce bottle lasted me more than a year. Yeah, at $56.00 a pop, it isn't cheap. But, if you figure it over 1.5 years, it's $2.33 per month. The company at my link is one I have dealt with for years, and I have always been satisfied with their service. They used to have samples of this make-up for $2 or $3 that you could order, so you could try it out on your own skin. Hope this helps!
