The barrage of attacks began with the official Texas GOP account sharing an image of O'Rourke holding a skateboard. It included the caption, "Sorry, I'm going to have to skate on the debate Friday. I just got this killer board. I'm sure the voters won't mind."

At face value, it seems like pretty standard political mud-slinging, but in a social network dominated by ironic youngsters, sharing images of the Senate hopeful holding a skateboard and playing in a band appears to have spectacularly backfired.

"I'm assuming the Texas GOP's thinking here is that Beto looks feminine in his dress, or weird, or whatever, and that this will turn off red-blooded Texans," wrote one politics writer reacting to the attack. "My thinking is: I would like to go on a date with this Beto and borrow his dress."
