We need to know our history, to keep it from happening again.

Thank you so much for posting them, my dear packman!

6. In any battle, the worst place to be is inside a tank.

Except for being outside a tank. That might be worse.

Tanks and submarines, no thank you, not for me. My corps had tanks on the E. German border. No fun when it's way below freezing.

7. Actually, the M1 Abrams is equipped with a pretty good diesel heater.

Takes forever to get it started, but works pretty well once it's going.

I've had the experience of doing a winter road march with my top half out of the hatch, freezing cold, and my lower half, inside the tank, almost uncomfortably warm from the heater.

As far as the life-expectancy of a tank crewman, we used to like to joke that it was pretty short in full-up tank-to-tank combat; somewhere between seven seconds and a minute. Of course, that was back when we thought the next war was going to be a conventional armored war with the Soviets in Central Europe. Thousands and thousands of tanks in an all-out slugging match.

It didn't turn out that way, thank goodness...
