because they think its a pagan holiday, which I guess it is.

My grandmother was a J.V. She managed to convert much of the family. But not me. I did pray to God when I was about 10 to forgive me for trick or treating. Even though she managed not to convert me, she did install all that damn guilt. Just turned me into being an atheist, especially after a year in Catholic boarding school when I was 12.

They don't celebrate birthdays either which I have never quite figured out.

We're also JWs. I never figured out the birthday thing either...

Anyway, after I grew up did a little of my own research on Bible and realized that there was several hundred years passage between the Old Testament and the New Testament I was able to figure out what was going on...

before the Catholics appropriated it. Christmas used to be a mid-winter Solstice celebration also, for Wiccans and Druids etc.

And actually, Halloween as we say it is a bastardization of All Hallow's Eve, the night before the Day of the Dead.

On the brighter side, they also don't pledge allegiance to the flag. They say it's idolatry, and it is, of course.

We go back a ways to my teen years. I had been dating a girl whose family was J.W. We were 17/18 when this happened mins you and had been dating for about a year and a half. Of course in our mind we would marry after I got back from Boot Camp. She wasnt really into the whole J.W. thing obviously.

So the during the summer before I shipped out (I left in October) her parents forced her to go to "camp". When she came back I was damn near knocked to the ground by her transformation.

So when she first got to camp she wrote me saying that this is a J.W. camp and she is going to have to focus on herself and God, and dont ne suprised ig she doesnt write back. Obviously I knew right then and there, that something funny was going on.

So i didnt hear from her she got back from camp for a week. She came over with her older brother and explained to me that we could no longer see each other. She stated that she belonged to God and since i wasnt a J.W. she could no longer see me. She was wearing the ankle long dress, carrying the bible, etc., gone were the Jean's and Anthrax Tshirts. I told her immediately that i would convert to J.W. so we could. Her brother immediately said that wouldnt work because I was going to join the military. This was obviously rehearsed by her parents and brother before they came to my house. I could see the pain in her eyes, like she wanted to run. I told her that she always would be safe with me, no matter what.

So in the months prior to me leaving we could only talk maybe a half dozen times, mostly by phone. She told me her parents were setting her up with a new boyfriend.

Talk about being devastated! Obviously I was also worried about her, but at the time I dont think I was mature enough to really process what had just happened other than, her dick parents made her all religious.

I often thought about her, though less and less and I got married and had two awesome kids and a wife. About the time Facebook started blowing up. 2008ish, i got a friend notification from her.

Talk about a blast from the past! I had so many questions! She fills me in that she ended up marrying that guy her parents set her up with. She divorced him after her father died. She was single and often thought about me. She also told me she was in town where I was stationed for two weeks and wanted to meet up and catch up on old times, and it seemed she still had feelings for me.

I had a moment of weakness (I'm only human) where I was thinking about going and "catching up", but I immediately thought of my family at the here and now. If I was to go I would have to have bring my wife with me, again I'm only human, and I've heard about old schoolmates hooking up through Facebook and just wrecking their family. So I told her as much, and she totally agreed with me. We ended up deciding that we probably shouldnt meet and just catch up over Facebook.

It turns out obviously now, that the camp she went to was a J.W. reprogramming facility. I wont get I to other personal details of her life since then. But I'm sure you can imagine the hell she went through and it probably still wouldnt compare the reality.

Thankfully I'm far enough out in the country we dont get Solicitors of any kind out here and that's fine by me. However, if one does come to my door I will invite them in. But I will tell them a story based in reality.
