with a black interior and a perennially bad muffler.
Every time I was at a stop light next to some guy in an overblown muscle car he wanted to race me.
So I would rev the engine and so would he the light would turn green and off he shot like a rocket in a cloud of dust as I meekly drove on laughing.

The used car guy had to drive it home for me since I didn't know how to drive a stick or even have a driver's license, for that matter.

I taught myself how to drive it by taking it out on back roads in the middle of the night. I actually didn't get my license for another seven years. The folly of youth.

not my car but in a friends mom's car. Never again. Down RT 183 from the Reading Airport to the Wodenshire Country Club swimming pool. Young, dumb and crazy.

Yeah, they were 390 c.i. four barrel carbed monsters. Along with the Oldmobiles of that time they were monsters.

My dad drove Dynamic 88s with the rocket 350s in them. As a kid I got to drive them. Let's say at 100 mph there was still room under the gas pedal.

That song "Hot Rod Lincoln" by Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen always brings back memories of those times.

but I thought 390 or 396 was the stock motor in them. I'm probly mistaken though. No big deal. THey had that big front bench seat and a thoroughly comfortable ride at 65/70 mph.

My best friends dad had a 68 Chrysler Imperial and that was like two cadillacs at the time. Neatest dashboard I ever saw.

To think these guys, my dad, my two friends dads, could afford to upgrade cars ever three years and pay cash for whatever difference there was is what we are missing now. Jeez, when a hyundai accent is 15K we are totally screwed.

Hated it because it was a money pit lol. I put fast in "" because it was pathetically slow compared to what I have owned since.

As I stated, I loved loved loved that car!

My father made me get rid of it and I did not want to but I had to as after one of its last great runs over Ebbetts Pass and Mosquito Lake not far from Donner Lake, Calif. Sadly, it threw a rod.

Barely made it home and after that I had to sell it.

I paid $1100 for it. Today it is worth over $2500+.

Black coupe. $500 in 1979. Piece of junk.
When I first met DH he was proud of his *brand new* 1977 Datsun (can’t think of the model, kind sporty coupe). My first impression was “what kind of spoiled brat college kid has a brand new car??” Turns out his mom got a nice inheritance and bought everyone in the family a new car. Couple years later he totaled it and bought a used Pinto.

After 6 months of driving I was hit by a drunk driver so I got a 68 Caprice Classic because Dad would not allow me to purchase a Chevy SS.

Found sitting in a field after several years. It had been brought home from Germany by a GI. Newer tires and battery was all it took to drive it away.

One each front fender:

Muncie M-20 4 speed, dual exhaust and A Rochester 750 4 bbl. About 9 mpg around town. Bought it for $350 from my cousin with 167,000 miles on it. It was about 4600 lbs with me in it; considerably more 5 or 6 friends from college heading for the beer distributor.

That was my gift to myself for graduating from college. My second car -- to celebrate graduating from law school -- was a silver Mazda RX-7, which I absolutely loved. That is probably why my ex-wife got it in our divorce. (She totaled it a year later, which was a metaphor for our marriage.)

I babysat for a guy that traded me babysitting time for the car, so basically $50!

I had to hide it from my parents. Parked it down the street!

Straight eight, hydromatic tranny, visor and fender skirts. Pontiac blue and not a dent on it! Radio that worked too!

When my parents finally discovered the car, I was sure they would be pissed and I would be grounded, but instead my dad said, "Well, let's see what's under the hood." He showed me how to do a valve job!

I t looked this, except it was blue.

Years later, I traded it in for a Fiat convertible. What a freakin' mistake.

1974 Ford Custom. I bought it at auction in 76 for $500 and drove it back to OK. The only alterations were they spray painted over the insignias and removed the lights. It had a 4 barrel carb, the speedometer went to 180. The backseat had no handles for doors and the widows didn't roll down, it had a mesh grill welded between the front and back and there was a rack for holding a shotgun between the 2 front seats. I didn't have a radio or AC either. Not exactly the party barge LOL
Sure, I had to find out how fast it would go. I had just backed off from 135 when the OK highway patrol clocked me. His first words were not "do you know how fast you were going" they were - "where did you get the car" He caught me at 104 in a 55 zone and fined me for reckless driving too. In 1978 that cost me $360.
I drove that car 4 years before the transmission fell out on the turnpike. It cost me more to get it off the highway than I paid for it. Best damn car I ever owned.

It was used and the 500's were even bald. Then the recall notice went out. I got a brand new set of 721's, no charge! The gas tank fix was just taking it in to the dealership to get it modified.

And a lever you could pull under the dash to open up a big air scoop under the center of the windshield.

I got sick of the Michigan winters, so I built my waterbed frame into a flat boat, chained it to the roof with chains running to each corner of the back and front bumpers, filled it with my worldly possessions, scored a bag of weed for the trip down, and drove it all on down to Miami.

All that was missing was the rocking chair on top.

As a teenaged girl, little did I know that this would attract so many boys. Any guy I knew even remotely was begging to drive it and to do work on it. I was the first person in my age group to have a sports car. Looking back on it now, I realize that this was 90% of the reason we had boys coming around. My parents HATED that car.....

I paid $250 for it. Had for a little over a year then bought a '65 GTO. That one cost $750.

I'm glad I did all my hot rodding and muscle cars when it was cheap. The cars I owned before I was 21 would add up to several hundred thousand dollars at a modern car auction. I didn't pay over $1500 for any of them.

I now drive a leased Nissan Sentra. I get 43 mpg highway to atone for my youthful environmental sins.
