(12,265 posts)I miss having a Sears Christmas Catalog in my hands to choose my gifts, to see the Andy Williams and Bing Crosby Christmas shows on TV. I need something that feels sane right now.

Oh, the prices, the prices.

(2,795 posts)I'm just letting it play in youtube for now because it's kind of fun.
I've been told to get my personal check cleared at the customer service desk before going to check out and also no smoking in the store, only at the snack bar

(82,849 posts)It was brand spankin' new in my little hometown and I was headed out of town for another year at college. I thought I'd stop in and buy a pair of flip-flops ($3.50) and write a check for a little over ($5.00) so I could buy dinner when I got to my destination. I had never been in a store where you had to get pre-clearance for a check, so I innocently got in the checkout line with my purchase and my checkbook.
As I said, I was heading off to college, and had deposit slips hanging of my checkbook for the tuition check I was going to need to write the next day. I was good for it, you know? Besides, $8.50 didn't seem comparable to the Great Brinks Heist. But the cashier proceeded to yell at me that I needed to get my check pre-cleared, and what was wrong with me anyway, and now she was going to have to call a supervisor over, who grumpily stomped over to look at my check, with four people standing behind me witnessing the whole show, and the supervisor scrutinized my check with the care of an Egyptologist looking at the Rosetta Stone, and finally pronounced the check acceptable (risking her career as a K-Mart supervisor, I'm quite sure), and the cashier then told me in no uncertain terms that I'd better not try to pull a stunt like that ever again.
Don't worry, K-Mart. I've never tried it again.

(2,795 posts)People used to write bum checks all of the time back then. I worked in a Ben Franklin store in high school and it was always a loss for the store because people would write checks with no funds to cover them. Sometimes they were able to recover the money many times not.
Kmart seems like it would have been ripe for that kind of shenanigans.
But they didn't need to be so rude about it. Maybe they should have posted it boldly at the cash register line so people wouldn't have to happen to hear it over the announcements.

(18,470 posts)It was the first one in Iowa so it had been around over 50 years.
I remember a fair number of Saturday afternoons spent there shopping with my mom and grandma.
In later years not many people shopped there until it was announced that it was closing then it seemed for a while like everyone wanted to shop there.
I kind of miss our local K-Mart at times because they were in a convenient location and sometimes good deals could still be found there. The staff was all right.
Part of the building is now being converted in to a VA clinic.

Thanks!

(57,446 posts)I think it would be fun to have a radio station make a slight alteration to that theme, by playing Christmas-related radio and TV advertising from the '60s and '70s.

(15,539 posts)I'm sick of it and that's because of everything starting in October. The stores already have their Christmas merchandise out. I just truly wish they would wait until after Thanksgiving.

(1,752 posts)I always like to stop in if I see one when Im on the road. If they survive (are they going under wit Sears?) they really should market that retro vibe - I think it would be a hit!

(15,539 posts)Or maybe I'm just wishing I were 20-something again. Ah, those were the days my friend.
I had a K-Mart within walking distance of my apartment complex. I had very little money then, and my husband of the time and I only had one car, so it sure was convenient.

(57,446 posts)I'm headed to Kmart Monday evening. The ones in northern Virginia have shuttered their doors, but the one in Hyattsville, Maryland, is still a going concern. Someone answered the phone and said that they would not be closing.
