looking at the family tree and we had a presence in Maryland back in 1760s. Then they headed west to Ohio and a few to Missouri. My mom's family changed spelling of last name after Civil War because some were CSA and others stayed loyal to the North.

13. Ancestry.com pledged in writing to me that they will NOT engage in health related research/services

I'd NEVER use 23 and me or the other ones that are trying to screen for genetic mutations linked (but poorly validated) to adverse disease states. Those are the ones that should give one pause vis-a-vis insurance companies.

When I agreed to ancestry.com, it was crucial to me that they agree ONLY to use collected dna for ancestry services. As for them using it in the newly field of forensic ancestry tracing for unsolved crimes, I have kept my family tree and results private. However, even if my findings were somehow used to find a distant relative linked to a serious violent crime, I'd be no help since I know no one beyond first cousins and don't intend to seek them out.
