The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsIt is jigzaw puzzle season
We started out slow with (2) 250 piece ones, then 300, and now we there is a 500 piece one out. It is really fun to have a puzzle going on a card table at this time of year. We have a tradition of writing a message on the back of the puzzle when it is finished, plus signatures. The puzzle is then passed along to a friend or family member.
Do you do puzzles at this time of year?

(7,395 posts)I understand. There is some of that on occasion.
We put a towel on the puzzle at night.

(26,283 posts)They are great because the cats can't mess with them and you can't lose any pieces.

(11,330 posts)it adds to the challenge...looking for the missing pieces and trying to fit the chewed pieces into the right space on the puzzle

(7,395 posts)I like time away from the computer and to feel the pieces. Plus, you can't flip it over and write a message to pass along.

(26,110 posts)but weve downsized and dont have the room now. I like the idea of signing them and passing them on to friends.

(26,283 posts)I'd love to find a program where I can make my own puzzles.

(21,946 posts)He took a large flat lazy susan, connected it to a piece of fairly thin plywood mostly for weight.
The the kids had a lot of hot wheel tracks he screwed to the edges of the plywood. That way the cat couldn't push them on the floor and I could sit at the coffee table working it and turn it as needed.
It was large enough to hold a 2 or 3 thousand piece puzzle.

(2,225 posts)to have a jigsaw puzzle going.
I am, alas, owned by 4 cats who think jigsaw pieces are provided so they can be distributed around the house like easter eggs.
And so I have also resorted to online puzzles to satisfy my impulses.
I prefer the puzzles on Jigidi, but there are several sites out there that can meet my needs.

(20,585 posts)Our second hand stores have lots of them - good ones too. There are so many pretty ones.
When I have house guests, I like to keep a puzzle going so guests have something to do while I fix meals etc.

(3,619 posts)especially at the holidays when everyone is home. I usually just leave one on a card table so people can work on it whenever. Unfortunately, our standard poodle is the perfect height to walk by and grab a piece. Last year, our 1000 piece puzzle turned into a 998 piece puzzle. We got smart and put a fortress of chairs around the table to keep her away. I love your tradition of writing messages and putting signatures on the back of the puzzle. We do exchange and share puzzles. I'll often make one puzzle on my own, but it really is more fun as a group activity.

(12,051 posts)We often have a puzzle going on in the dining room -- tired of reading or the internet? Hands aching from crafts or crochet? Go work on the puzzle for a while.

(12,394 posts)Apparently because several senses are applied to problem solving with jigsaw puzzles versus crossword puzzles.

(7,395 posts)The current puzzle being worked on is NOT what is on the picture of the box! Ha! It was purchased new.
A fun twist to the game!

(36,275 posts)Bush calls Cheney because he is so proud of having finished a jigsaw puzzle.
"Hey, Dick", says Bush, "I am so proud because the box this puzzle came in says 5 to 8 years on the side and I finished it in just under 6 months."
Cheney sighs and says, "You are indeed a genius, George."
Bush says, "Hey, Dick, I'm having trouble with my new puzzle, though, can you help me?"
Cheney says, "Sure, George, what's your problem."
Bush says, "Well, none of the pieces fit together in any way. I didn't have this problem with the other puzzle."
Cheney says, "Well, look on the cover of the puzzle box and tell me what kind of picture you see - that should give you a hint."
Bush says, "All I see is a picture of a really big rooster."
Cheney thinks for a minute and says "George, put all the cornflakes back in the box ..."

(16,334 posts)No less than 1000 pieces. We've been on a Ravensburger kick for the past few years. Some really fun ones were a series called Proverbidioms - word puns and phrases depicted in the puzzle.

(2,679 posts)Not even working on it all day either. And I have cats.
I love puzzles. Just did a Game of Thrones
And since I had a GoT theme for Halloween, I put it outside for that night. It took a whopping 3hrs to do.
I am all in favor of jigsaw puzzle season.

(15,545 posts)but last year I didn't get the table out. I found I was getting nothing else accomplished whenever I started on a puzzle. They are highly addictive to me. My family grew up doing jigsaw puzzles. My local library always has many for sale during their used book sales so I only pay a dollar or two for some really great ones and then when I'm done I turn them back into the library for resale to someone else.
