Basically gives them something else to think about.
OR, you could just train the horse to stand still for the farrier (blacksmith). Start at an early age.

I asked my farrier if he'd ever heard of this. He said, he had a client try it years ago, and the ensuing explosions from her colt started a fire that nearly burnt the barn down.
Of course, babies are always kind of crazy....
