(12,504 posts)I subscribed to the NordVPN for 3 years (2.99/month) a few months ago. Cheap insurance to help combat ransomware hackers.

(16,172 posts)I ask because I'm not very tech savvy and worry about pissing someone off while arguing politics. I was under the impression that an ISP address could lead someone to my home. Is that true?

(2,497 posts)Of course, it depends on why you want it. Free tends to be slow and limited. They also tend to sell your browsing data (my favorite rule of commerce is if something is free, you are the product).
I've looked at a lot of different VPN services - I am frequently using public wifi, so I consider VPN essential. I ended up settling on ProtonVPN. They are highly privacy oriented and have excellent speed. I use there $4 per month plan. If you have extreme privacy concerns and/or a lot of devices you want to use at the same time, they have an $8 a month plan that is really second to none when it comes to privacy. If I was a dissident in a totalitarian country, that is the plan I would use.
As a side benefit, they do a really good job of keeping their servers from being blacklisted by streaming sites. I've been able to watch a lot of out of country shows not available in the US.
