To the dismay of wool proponents who tout their eco-friendly credentials, they have landed on the wrong side of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. The animal-rights group recently erected billboards in Boston and New Yorks Times Square that display a nude picture of actress Alicia Silverstone with the phrase Leave Wool Behind across her backside.

Lucky Brand stopped using the antiwool tag after speaking with some critics, said Chief Executive Carlos Alberini. It was never our intention to offend anyone with this hangtag, he said. After clothing retailer Duluth Trading Co. recently advertised a fleece-lined shirt with the tagline, No smelly animal fur here, just soft, furnace-warm 200-gram polyester fleece, retribution was swift.
I beg of you, please stop throwing wool under the bus, Ms. Parkes wrote in an Instagram post. You know as well as I do that commercial wool has no scent at all, and that it comes from a living animal who goes on living a very good life, said the 49-year-old who lives in Portland, Maine. Fleece is just plastic and isnt biodegradable, she said. The post drew thousands of supporters, and an about-face from Duluth Trading. The company has taken antiwool statements out of future catalogs after hearing concerns, said a spokeswoman. We have a deep appreciation of the wool industry, she said. Decembers catalog, she said, was a celebration of wool.
At the heart of the debate is whether shearing helps or hurts sheep. PETA and the Humane Society of the U.S. say sheep farming for wool is inhumane, and PETA cited undercover videos the organization took of bloody shearing on big sheep farms in Australia. The wool community says a big part of its problem is small U.S. farms are taking the fall for rougher treatment and controversial practices employed by a few large wool producers.

Every so often, a wool sheep is found that hasnt been sheared for years, emerging from a cave or a remote mountain pass looking like a bulbous duster on spindly legs. Lucky Brands tag pictured Shrek, a merino wool sheep found in a New Zealand cave that became famous in 2004 for evading shearing for six years. Weighed down by too much wool, sheep can suffer heat stress, inability to feed babies, lack of vision and maggot infestation, said Susan Myers, president of the American Association of Small Ruminant Practitioners.

(47,487 posts)Do you disagree with the notion that shearing sheep is beneficial for them? Even if you do not like wool, or allergic to it, this should not come at the expense of sheep.

The RSPCA said sheep like Chris, a Merino that are bred especially for their wool, need to be shorn regularly or they can have trouble going to the bathroom and can develop serious medical issues like flystrike or infection.

(50,955 posts)Its one of those loony ideas that people on the right would point to to say animal rights advocates have gone too far when actually it's three guys in a basement with a manifesto.
ETA: I just read post 5 here.

(57,489 posts)Hold on.
Nah, I can't come up with anything quite like it. Just imagine a Wall Street, old money, Ivy League, private club look, that sort of thing. Never out of style. Like that.
There's a small thrift store near me that gets really nice stuff all the time. Recently, it must have happened that someone old died and all his things were donated. Either that, or he retired, and all his stuff got donated. Totally excellent tailoring, workmanship, and material in all his suits. Every one of them was way too big for me. I need to be trimming my collection too, so I didn't get any. They would have all required costly alteration.
The merino wool jacket is bigger than I ordinarily wear, but it is a winter item, so I wear a sweater underneath. The net result: perfect fit.
I don't go for the skinny hipster look.
Edited:
I have it!
Just imagine what this guy would wear:
Well-Manicured Man
That's the best description I can come up with.

(102,292 posts)I would have a hard time imagining small sheep facilities, who tend to live with their animals adjacent, are anything but compassionate in handling them. That has certainly been my experience, however limited.
I love wool, but sadly, after my third intense efforts to rid myself of clothing moths over the past decade, (and yes, doing EVERTHING recommended with the exception of the old time highly toxic napthalene moth balls), I don't tend to buy wool anymore. But, I surely appreciate it.
Be kind to sheep, but support the industry!

(57,489 posts)That's what I use. Whenever I smell paradichlorobenzene, I am reminded of my grandmother. She stored all her wool stuff with it.
I have lots of wool clothes. I buy them secondhand as well. I do see holes on occasion. I know how to sew.

(22,099 posts)I think PETA goes overboard......no pets, no meat, etc. They do some good work in regards to animal testing.
Anyone I've ever known that had sheep gave them quite humane treatment. Of course, those weren't big sheep ranches.
Love my wool sweaters and socks!

This sounds to me like some people are taking money (knowingly or not) from big oil interests that wants everything made of synthetics. I smell Koch in the air!.....
Merino wool is expensive but worth the investment if one takes good care of their garments. No itch at all, and I have sensitive skin. The winter socks are to die for, especially for us older folks.
Cedar oil spray keeps moths away. Just take some wood shavings (preferably cedar), spray them with cedar oil, stuff them into an old sock and hang them in your closets. Smells good too! Just re-spry the bags every few months to keep them effective.
PETA can kiss my wool-covered behind......... ..........

Pictures at the link of a sheep with heavy wool being shorn. Poor thing must have suffered under that thick coat.
