(1,896 posts)"What the hell are those things on my head?!?!" is actually not the dumbest reaction. It's pretty cute, though.

(37,648 posts)Dogs supposedly can't see or tell dimensional reflections or something like that. My dogs have never shown any interest in reflections of themselves or others. Except for my current dog, Rosie. She will look in a mirror and see me standing in the background. She knows it's me. She'll turn around and run to me. Then go back and look in the mirror at me again, then turn around and look at me again. She KNOWS it's not me in the mirror, but a reflection of me standing in the back. Rosie has large eyes and excellent eyesight, and is very intelligent, though I don't know if those things make any difference.
My cocker spaniels, OTOH...when I'd tap on a mirror in front of them to get to look, they'd look for a second at my finger, then look away. No interest at all. Didn't seem to notice a reflection of anything at all. But both of my Cocker Spaniels would watch tv. I'm not kidding. One would bark every time he saw another dog on tv. He watched 101 Dalmations movie for an hour. My other spaniel would also watch tv with dogs in it sometimes.

(37,648 posts)It's pretty cute. She sees me, I wave, she wags her tail while looking at me in the mirror and gets excited, then turns around and runs to me. It's cute. I was surprised the first time she did that. It was an accident the first time. I looked in the mirror from an angle, and saw her looking at me in the mirror..she was at another angle. Then she looked at me in the room, then back at my image in the mirror.
She's always been very visual. She uses her eyesight a lot. She's a mix, so maybe she has some hound in her. There are sight hounds. Large round eyes set high on the face...like a greyhound. But she's a Russell Terrier mix w/I don't know what else. Very intelligent.

(86,736 posts)Long, long ago, I had a kitty who walked on a leash. We went to visit my sister who lived at the beach for a week and went for walks along the shoreline, she liked the water and the fishy smells, it was new to her at the time. She was probably two or three at the time. On the Sunday night that we were there we watched the Tony Awards and Merrill Lynch was a sponsor. This was when they started that bulls on the beach ad campaign, and that ad came on the screen. My cat got up and went to the glass wall that looked out on the beach and she looked out seeing it was dark, then back at the teevee and the ad, then back out the window wondering if the bulls were coming. This went on for the duration of the ad. She was kind of puzzled by the teevee after that. She was definitely watching the tube and comprehending what she saw. She was also pretty smart about other things, never tried to attack the kitty on the mirror.

(7,813 posts)I tried to teach my kitties about mirrors by holding them in front of it, showing them their reflections, petting them, etc. Nuttin'.
The gray and white fur is absolutely beautiful. Wow.
