Crap. My employer brought up the "p" word to me.

That word is "promotion".

I don't want it. I'm happier being good at what I do now.

I thought I had mastered the art of being good enough to be valuable without making myself a target for "more responsibility" (and the headache that goes with it).

Guess not.

that is what my ex-neighbor did. He was WA State Patrol and they wanted to promote him. He said no - the higher a person goes, the more political the job. He retired happy and people thought highly of him.

My best friend also does not want a promotion. Her office has lots of back stabbing but she can easily avoid it in her current position. A promotion would put her in the worst of it so she said no too.

Honestly, you never really know until you say "no".

I'm happy enough where I am. It pays the bills and leaves me fulfilled without bringing it home with me.

Just the thought of a job that follows you home and accosts you at all hours is rarely worth the compensation.

Do you have an aging parent or a young child in your life?

Or both?

Everybody gets the "sandwich generation" these days ... if you need a reason.

Good luck

of the higher job I turned down turned so ugly that people were miserable, and I escaped it all to retire in one piece.
