Photographer Captures Spanish Hunting Dogs As They Enjoy Their Life Of Freedom

I Capture Spanish Hunting Dogs As They Enjoy Their Life Of Freedom

By Marcus Gier

Hi, my Name is Marcus Gier and I am a hobby-dog photographer from Cologne in Germany. I love to photograph dogs, especially the Spanish Galgo.

Every year in Spain thousands of Galgos (the Spanish sighthound) are breed and born for hunting. As soon as the galgos are no longer useful for hunting, they are disposed of in an awful and painful way. They are brutally killed, hung on trees, burned alive, or otherwise tortured. The World Galgo Day is a day where all of us can give a voice to the spanish dogs and give them attention.

My way and voice for the Galgo are to show you some of the rescued Spanish Galgos and their enjoyment of life.

This horrific practice must end. Sorry, but I feel that the monsters who treat these dogs so cruelly and despicably should be treated the same way. It's good to see people rescuing these poor, horribly mistreated souls and giving them the real life they deserve. There are around 25 pictures in total.

They've had three of them for years, but they still bear the scars of their former lives. They have huge fear of abandonment for one, and I remember one time one of the dogs was choking on some food, and the other two immediately became terrified and made themselves scarce. I didn't understand why until my BIL explained that these dogs had witnessed the hanging of other dogs at the end of hunting season...

Ugh. I can't imagine anybody treating dogs that way. I certainly don't have any use for anybody that would.

Shame they probably wont get the exposure they need on boredpanda but it's better than nothing.
Spain has a terrible problem with animal welfare, not just the galgos either. Someone dumped a puppy over one of our neighbours fences just this morning, that's an improvement on the trash bag on the side of the road but it still makes me sick.

Cause yeah, that's friggin horrifying. People who do that should have the same done to them.

As far as what comes earlier in their lives, dogs that've been bred and raised to hunt ... absolutely love to hunt.

Not that I'm a hunter, hell I've barely even fished, but ... yeah. They LOVE it.

Please sign (It's the Dutch who are rescuing and trying to help stop this atroocity. February is the kill month in Spain):

https://www.animalstoday.nl/petition-ban-the-hunting-with-galgos-spain/#PETITIE

You can make a donation there.

Approximately 50,000 Spanish galgos (sighthounds) are annually killed or abandoned. Pondencos usually suffer the same fate. The wholesale abandonment takes place on a yearly basis in February. Spain is the only European country where it is allowed to hunt with galgos. Many dogs are now being adopted in European countries, but this, in the end, offers no solution to the problem. The hunt itself must be banned. February is approaching, so please sign this petition.

These dogs have just helped them hunt for food for their families. Their reward is being horribly tortured to death?! Even if it's some kind of tradition, how can they not see how wrong that is

Such gratuitous cruelty -- hard to believe and even harder to understand. I received a petition request, like the one in the post above, in my email awhile ago -- I signed of course -- It's the first I'd heard of this sick, heartbreaking "tradition".

There's definitely some cultural pathology there, going way back.

It IS changing, but not fast enough.

regretfully,
Bright
