(9,897 posts)The athletes (and actors and entertainers) who "earn" salaries in excess of the GDP of many tiny impoverished nations and their asshole owners (whose wealth is usually measured in quantities that make France, Spain and Italy jealous) are the apex of an inverted wealth pyramid.
Those currently holding sway over wealth and power in this modern world could ALL disappear tomorrow and within a week there would be no discernible impact to the planet other than a void of mainly irredeemable assholes. Of course there are great examples of players giving back and supporting communities - so I recognize its an overly broad brush to paint with....HOWEVER, my complaint is not with the money itself but rather the system that places such disproportionate value on the inconsequential and vapid instead of the crucial issues hat go unaddressed instead.
Billionaire owners and multi-millionaire players and coaches exist in place of medical care for all citizens that are dying by the THOUSANDS, in place of technological solutions to climate and emissions issues that are killing the PLANET, in place of a national education and trade school system that ensures all citizens are trained to contribute in meaningful ways to the society in which we all live. They exist in lieu of a just society for all, leaving us a bifurcated justice system that is more for sale and protection of the rich than it is for justice. They take and take and take and on the aggregate contribute next to nothing of real consequence.
These people accumulate wealth and horde it to themselves and select family members like the Saudi royal family. The issue is not how much they have but why does society place such disproportionate wealth on such inconsequential acts? Why are we collectively so vapid and insipid and brainwashed to be wealth-worshipping consumers of last resort? If I had the answer, the world would be different, but sadly I don't know what to do to metaphorically change humanity's channel...
