1. Why couldn't they play the halftime show?

Guaranteed that the Foos would bring the house down, and the caliber of special guests that Dave could get would destroy whatever that was this year!

The Super Bowl only pays the expenses for the half time performer, so they generally are either promoting a new album or they're already on tour, ticket sales are weak and they can use the publicity. Katy Perry even said the SB wanted her to cover some if her expenses, but she refused. So my guess is that's why many obvious choices, like the FF, haven't played. They aren't willing to work for free. Can't say I blame them.

That being said, when David Letterman asked them to play on his first show after his heart surgery, they were touring South America. They canceled it so they could play for Dave. They came back for his last show too, and wore tuxedos.

3. Yeah sadly the Super Bowl halftime show isn't about music, it's about selling out.

And whoever can sell out to Pepsi the most gets the job, I guess. Which sucks because they could get much better music, the Foos playing would be awesome.
