(54,397 posts)There is one spot off Kona where huge lights have been installed on the ocean floor, maybe 40 feet down. You hire a boat to take you out there, and around sunset, you go into the water. Professional divers go down and turn on the lights, which attract plankton. The mantas feed off the plankton, and are drawn to the lights. About ten of them "flew" in. They literally put on a show for the people. I have ear problems, so I can't scuba, but my elder daughter and I were snorkeling on the surface. The mantas came right up to us and started doing underwater somersaults, their huge bodies turning inches from our faces, never touching. It's something you remember in detail for the rest of your life.

(54,397 posts)You get the idea, but it's ten times this spectacular when it's happening right in front of you.

(54,397 posts)Dead tourists look bad on their publicity, it seems.
But it's WELL worth doing if you get the chance, even just to snorkel on the surface. The mantas came up to us snorkelers and did those somersaults right in front of our noses, too!
