Retsina is a Unique Greek Wine
Home > Greek Cooking > Retsina is a Unique…
Written by GreekBoston.com in Greek Cooking
The first time you take a sip of retsina, a Greek white wine, you might be a little shocked. At first glance, retsina looks and even smells like a typical white wine. After your first sip, however, you’ll realize that first impressions are deceiving. It tastes faintly of pine resin, which is actually how the wine got its name.

Retsina wine has been made in Greece for at least the past 2000 years. Back then, winemakers often let wine stand in open or porous vessels. Because those vessels let oxygen inside them, the wine would spoil quickly. However, the Greeks discovered that if you seal the vessels with pitch from Aleppo pine trees, it will prevent oxygen from getting in and the wine would keep longer. However, it does release the pine flavoring into the wine itself.

Haven't had that in a while, but as I recall it tastes like pine tar. I am definitely a bigger fan of Greek food than I am of Greek spirits. Not a big fan of Ouzo either.

and I remember my first encounter with retsina. (They're pint-sized, to my recollection.)

"This stuff tastes like turpentine!" I thought, but decided to order a second bottle anyway.

After knocking off the second one I thought "Hmmm, this stuff isn't so bad!" and decided to order a third.

After the third I was like "I can kick anybody's ass here!"

It kinda sneaks up on you.

Not a big fan of ouzo, either. Beer with an ouzo chaser (we called that combo a "depth charge" back in the day) was guaranteed to produce a memorable hangover.

Husband had a serious run-in with a 'Wild Turkey' when we weren't married long yet. The turkey got the best of 'the turkey'. He and a friend did this in our neighbor's apt. on the first floor when we lived in Baba's house.
