I took my first (and I hope ONLY) ice related fall of 2019, this morning

Walking out to my car, I didn't see the small patch of VERY thin and smooth ice on my otherwise clear front walkway. One foot went forward, one went backward, and I landed on my left knee and hand. I was probably distracted by the excitement that I finally have my car back, after 3 weeks at the mechanic, and while gazing at the loveliness of my Saturn, I completely missed noticing the ice.

Now, the good news is, for an old broad, I'm still pretty flexible and sturdy. There's a little cut on my hand, bruising and a couple abrasions on my knee, and what I am beginning to realize is a bit of a muscle pull in my lower back. But no broken bones and no discomfort that can't be eased by a glass of Shiraz.

Winter can't end quick enough, for me.

My wife took a tumble on a patch of sidewalk ice one day just as a bus was going by. She figures no fewer than a dozen people watched her land on her keister. Insult to injury!

It did occur to me that, had I hit my head on the concrete, I'd probably have laid there for quite some time.

Last year that same thing happened to me in a parking lot, and several people rushed over to make sure I was ok.

Sometimes it takes a day or to before the full extent of injuries are known. I haven't fallen in a few years and I hope that luck continues.

This probably isn't the best time to remind you, but you borrowed $100 from me last Friday and said you'd pay it back today with 20% interest.

I'll send you my PayPay details!

Hope you're feeling better!

Nurses told me your arms will automatically attempt to protect your face as you fall, but if you fall backwards you will clunk your head.

Walking home from an evening shift a few years ago in the dead of winter. I hit a patch of black ice and my feet came out from under me, straight up in the air. Backwards I went. I had the presence of mind and the ability to tuck my chin into my chest. I hit the ground with quite a thud. It knocked the wind out of me. I lied there for about 30 seconds before getting up. BUT I avoided the concussion I definitely would have suffered if I hadn't protected the back of my noggin.

This old broad invested in some of the ice cleats that easily slip onto shoes or boots. When I get to my destination, they fold up and go into a baggie that fits in my pocket. Haven't slipped on ice since I've had them, well worth the few dollars!

Thanks!

I had hoped that, next year, I'd be spending a lot of my Winter season visiting my niece in Florida. But now she and her new husband are coming back to Michigan. I'm thrilled to bits they will be so close, even if it does remove my dream of spending my Winters in warmer climates.

now I won't go outside without them - there's still ice under the snow and I don't want to fall on my old ass.

That's a good sign! Hopefully your back doesn't give you too much trouble but you'll surely be stiff for a while because your body tenses up when you're falling.

What model year is your Saturn? GM stopped producing them in 2009. Has it served you well up until recently?

I just had to have some timing chain work done but other than that, it's a wonderful car. Apparently it was getting a whole lot of notice from other customers, at the mechanic's. The body is in pretty much pristine condition. The previous owner used it just once a year, to drive to Florida.

I've been driving Saturns since 1998. It will break my heart when I finally have to move on to something else.

how station wagons fell out of favor for years but have come back with a vengeance dressed up as "cross-over vehicles." Many of those are essentially station wagons, just with different aesthetics.

Which would only happen if something made driving out of the question, for me.

I really don't enjoy driving, so I don't do a lot of it. But when it was at the mechanics, that less of independence was really difficult.

ok, but you never know. You might wake up tomorrow and realize that the fall took a much greater toll on your body than you thought.

That has happened to me before. I would slip and fall and think only my ego was bruised, but would then wake up the next day and be like OMG - I felt like I had aged 20 years. Usually a little moist heat and some rest will help. If not, a chiropractor or physical therapist can do wonders.

I am terrified of the ice since I have a weak knee due to a number of ski injuries and operations years ago. One bad slip and I'm in for surgery again. Anyway, I hope you feel better and it's nothing more than a little soreness. Keep that bottle of Shiraz close by!

When I first saw the OP I wondered about your car. Well looks like that is back.

This can't last much longer. We have never been so house bound as we are this year.
But it will soon be over.

Hope that knee doesn't have some delayed pain. That happens a lot.

I think I'm going to take it really easy, tomorrow. Hopefully TCM will be running some good movies, and if not, my brother brought me a new stack of historical biographies. One, on Eleanor of Aquitaine, looks particularly interesting.

A friend of mine went out to get her newspaper recently and tripped on the way back into the house. Broke her arm in 2 places. Please be careful. Those spikes look like they'd be an excellent safety measure.
