(1,979 posts)My mother, Polly, 1918-2011, used to tell us about putting cardboard in their shoes and polishing them with a banana peel. I still have my dad's (same age as mom) homemade shoe shine box that he would run all over detroit with. I have a million rich stories from their collective pasts that help me everyday.
Those were some tough times. I wish I had Them both here to tell me more.

(84 posts)Volume Shoe Source, anyone? My shoes would turn mushy in the rain, and my toes would poke out the end, so I would color my white socks with black marker, so nobody would notice.
Also, wore plastic bread bags inside my moonboots, to try and keep my feet dry.
Poverty taught me a lot, but mostly that it sucks.
