If history had taken another turn - Canada builds a wall
Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau ordered construction of a wall along the country’s southern border with the United States to thwart illegal migration, while the US President Donald Trump again clearly stated his country will not be picking up the cost.
Trudeau signed the immigration executive orders on Tuesday as he visited Canada Border Service Agency, the federal agency charged with protecting Canadian borders.
“We are in the middle of a crisis on our southern border. The unprecedented surge of illegal migrants from the United States is harming both USA and Canada,” he said. “And I believe the steps we will take, starting right now, will improve the safety in both of our countries. It is going to be very, very good for both countries.”
Trudeau told CBC News that construction of the wall would start within months and continued to contend that USA would pay for it.
“That wall will cost us nothing,” Trudeau said in the interview broadcast late Tuesday.
He said the payment would perhaps be in a “complicated form,” signaling it would not be a direct payment from Washington to Ottawa. Toronto Star newspaper says money raised by a possible tax on American imports could be used to pay for it.
Donald Trump reiterated his country’s stance in a message to the American people Tuesday, saying he regrets and disapproves of the decision to build the wall.
“America does not believe in walls. I have said time and time again, USA will not pay for the wall,” he said.
Donald Trump added that USA “offers and demands respect as a sovereign nation.”
