Someone had just left him there but he has the best family now!BY CAITLIN JILL ANDERS
A group of friends were out walking their dogs through a park in Oklahoma one morning when they suddenly noticed a tiny puppy, just lying in the grass. He was incredibly skinny and missing some patches of fur, and overall looked very defeated. As soon as he noticed the group, however, he perked up and started to follow them and they immediately decided they couldnt just leave him behind.
The group arranged to take the little puppy straight to the vet to get him checked over and scanned for a microchip, but unfortunately he didnt have one. They kept him for two weeks, posting about him online and searching everywhere they could think of for someone who could be missing him, but they came up completely empty, and thus began the search for his new family.
Katy and Jacob Bywater were friends with the group who found the puppy and had actually been looking to adopt a dog within the next few months. Their friends asked them if they would be interested in taking the puppy, and even though they didnt know anything about him, they had a feeling he was meant to be their dog.
They decided to name the puppy Strider, and welcomed him into their family. At first, he was very timid and didnt seem interested in playing much. It was almost as if he didnt know how, as if no one had ever bothered to teach him. He was around 10 weeks old at that point, and after taking him to a vet, it was determined that he was likely a red heeler and beagle mix, and wouldnt grow to be too large.
The couple was thrilled about this, as theyd been looking for a dog on the smaller side but as the weeks went by, it became very clear that their little puppy wasnt going to stay little for very long.
By the time he turned 6 months old he was almost 40 pounds, so we figured he must not be beagle, but we were sure he was red heeler because he has the body and color of one, Bywater told The Dodo. We purchased a DNA test kit online and through it figured out, while he is red heeler, he is also Great Pyrenees. Of course this new news did not change our minds about him, and he is still a part of our family. At 8 months old he is about 50 pounds now and we are unsure how big exactly he will get.
Strider turned out to be quite the surprise, but his new parents wouldnt change a single thing about him. Each day he seems to get bigger and bigger, and with every day that passes hes also coming out of his shell more, too. Hes no longer that little scared puppy who was found at the park, and has grown into a playful, goofy dog who loves running around and playing with his family every chance he gets.
After a couple weeks of having him he definitely came out of his shell, Bywater said. He plays all the time it's hard to figure out whether his favorite thing is food or playing. He loves running, playing with any toy that you can find, tug-of-war and roughhousing on the couch or bed. He is very spoiled and gets to sleep with us every night, and we wouldn't trade him for the world.

(2,674 posts)You can tell by pictures with his tongue handing out and what looks like a smile, that he is a happy dog.
Best dog I ever had was a pit-mix which belonged to my neighbor who did not feed the mother or take care of the puppies. We found her tangled and bleeding in barbed wire and I told my husband we were keeper her.
She was the most loving dog I have ever owned and I have owned many dogs. We had her for 16 years and I still miss her every day.
THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO ADOPTS AN ABANDONED PUPPY! ALSO ABANDONED KITTENS. I LOVE YOU ALL FOR DOING THIS. HUGS AND MORE HUGS TO YOU!
