(38,427 posts)I am sort of. (Haven't set mine up in a long time) But some of us have them set up full time, like this man in the basement. When that happens, (up full time) you can improve, and improve and more and more. I set mine up for about a year in the living room, and by the time I was finished, I had electricity in all the homes, (that is they lite up) the streets had street lights, people walking and so on. People came over and they were amazed. 5 foot by 10 foot table, with wires everywhere. Switches, the whole nine yards. And when I got it going, and running around and around with everything working, it was fun. Mine was also HO gauge. I have seen all sizes of model trains. One of the Chicago Museums (Museum of Science and Industry on the Southeast side) had an incredible model train as a kid, my dad took us there and we watched and watched.)...
(I think it is 60 feet by 60 feet)
Now, it is even more incredible. But you got to see it to believe it. But, and this is important..they take a lot of time and effort. It really depends on how far you want to go into the hobby.
..Yes, you can still set up some track on the rug or floor with lots of switches and stuff, and pick it up when you are done..after a few hours and put it away. Yes..you can do that.
..But the true devotees, do what this guy does, they make the whole deal look real. Totally real. I don't know if you heard it, but he "weathered his trains and buildings" to make them look like they have been out there outside for a long time. Yes, there are specialists among model railroaders that .."weather" homes and trains to make them look like they are not new...but have been out there in the "weather." This is not the only one like this a You Tube. There are many more. And some are more incredible than this one. Some are trains put up by "model RR clubs"..(the club members spend years fixing it up)... Among club members there are "track specialists" "engine specialists" "electricity specialists" and scenery specialists...?? Ok that is enough. You want more info, go to you tube and watch some of the other set ups. Or goggle "model railroads" it will show you incredible layouts..(there is one in Germany, that has a model airport on the layout)

(38,427 posts)Worth watching if you got the time..Some of the members describe how they got into the hobby.
this one is four minutes..It is also worth watching to hear how the members run this model rr. They try to run it like a real railroad, picking up railroad cars and dropping those cars off at another place on the layout. Yes, when you get this far into the hobby..you are kinda really into it. This model is also incredible.
