I live about 40 miles west of Dayton in Richmond, Indiana which is right on the Ohio/Indiana state line. When that storm system that generated all of those tornadoes hit, it came through this area first.
I guess it was about 9PM that I got a tornado warning alert on my cell phone. I had been hearing the rumbling of thunder for a little bit, but hadn't paid too much attention to it. There were no tornado sirens.
I looked out of the front door and slightly to the northwest I saw a lightening storm unlike anything I've ever seen. The weather service reported 130 lightening strikes in a 10 minute span, and there was more lightening in addition to that that didn't strike the ground. The lightening was constant.
We had no rain and very little wind so I figured the storm was going to pass us to the north. But I told my wife to be prepared to take cover. We have a basement below our house. I told her that a tornado sounds like an approaching freight train. The storm did pass us to the north but barely. A funnel cloud touched down in a corn filed about 6 miles north of our house. The weather service in Dayton tracked a tornado that turned out to be an EF4 that formed at the state line and moved in a slightly southeast direction that was on the ground for over and hour and a half. We are thinking that the one that touched down north of our house was that one. It moved through Preble County, Ohio and tore up the small town of Brookville on its way to heavily damaging the Dayton area and then on to the east for a few more miles. The weather service thinks that there were 14 tornadoes that hit the Dayton area. I've never heard of anything like it.
I work out of Dayton and two of my co-workers were affected by the tornadoes. One guy lives in Brookville and his house was damaged, but not severely. However, he is still without power there. Another co-worker suffered much more loss. I talked to him today. He said he house is heavily damaged and a new Lincoln MKZ he had just bought a few weeks before was totaled. A tree fell on it. He is also still without power.
I feel very fortunate right now, and I feel for the people of Dayton.

(17,988 posts)Right off I 70 or 40 if you come that way. I go to Richmond fairly often.
Trotwood about 5 miles south is devastated. Brookville, the tornado went right down Westbrook road, a friend lives 2 blocks north..into Trotwood, across to Harrison Twp. On over to Dixie Drive.
West Milton ,to the north was hit. Porsdam, even Celina, 50 miles north. North Dayton.
Not sure where you work, but many areas are blocked. At last count there were 10 tornadoes.
Volunteers are everywhere but so many areas are wiped out.

(500 posts)just had a few limbs down. My cousin, however was not so lucky. She is a police dispatcher in Dayton and they have lost everything, home, cars, and at least one pet is missing.

(25,988 posts)I've recently seen reference to at least three other cities where the sirens didn't go off or started too late.
BTW, I've driven past your city many times. i remember what appears to be the world's largest RV dealership along the interstate.

(14,134 posts)I used to live there. Historic town with lots of old, huge trees. Almost all of those trees are gone. Every road was blocked by a tree. It was a mess!
Very glad you are OK!

(1,278 posts)I spent many a day and night in the Richmond area. In a matter of fact, I rolled a truck on US 27 about 7 miles north of I-70, and that was the end of my major company career (Covenant Transport). I would pick up in town, regular pickups in Brookville, and we had terminals in both Indy and Columbus. I know the area and send good vibes to the nice people of that part of the lower Ohio Valley.
