I can imagine a small old timey theater watching Keaton on the screen and laughing and marveling at his antics.

then falling from the other building, then thru window awnings, well that one spooked me. Impressive. How'd he do that...how was it staged?

Quite a flexible, brave guy.

But even then, when someone asked him how he kept from getting hurt, he'd mention all of his bruises and broken bones.

He was part of his parents’ vaudeville act, much of which consisted of him being thrown about and treated very badly while he remained stone faced. I suspect it was pretty terrible but he developed some serious skills, as well as that implacable character.
