Weird/odd food things you do

I’ve very recently found that pepper on mayonnaise is really really tasty but then I put pepper on everything.

Salt on lettuce completely changes it’s taste. That’s the only time I’d add salt to anything.

Oh and a Hershey bar section on a saltine cracker is delicious!

i think I can market them except if you don't eat them right away the Cheetos lose their crunch. Maybe I just need packaging like the old McDLT that kept the hot side hot and the cold side cold. Keep the crunchy middle crunchy and the the gooshy outsides gooshy.

Only weird because we seem to be the only ones who do this.
If the syrup is ice cold, it cools down the waffle right away. If the syrup is hot, it melts the butter and keeps the waffle nice and warm. Pancakes have a little more heat capacity than waffles, but they're still better with hot syrup.

Just don't understand the idea of cold syrup, but whatever.

Jun 2019

when I first figured this out I was in my teens so like 50 years ago. There were no microwaves so I would put grated cheese on a piece of tin foil and put it under the broiler. Timing is everything too short and there can be some unmelted cheese. If you let it go too long it gets crispy, which while delicious it is hard to separate from the foil. In our modern age I of course have access to a microwave and put the cheese on a plate to melt.

The elementary school I went to in Missouri in the early 70s always served it that way, and it got imprinted on me. To this day I don’t know if that was a Missouri thing or something someone at that school dreamed up to use up a surplus of peanut butter.

And we never did PB and chili at home until my brother and I had it at school, even though my mom was originally from Iowa and dad grew up not too far from where we were living in Missouri. Funny how regional/cultural differences develop.

70. Salt on watermelon and cantaluope...
Fri Jun 14, 2019, 09:18 PM
Jun 2019

Several years ago when living in Chicago, I went to a work picnic one weekend. We had about a dozen watermelons iced down for dessert. When it came time to dig in, about 10 off us were sitting down at a picnic table ready to dig in. Having grown up in Arkansas, I assumed the law required salting your melon before eating. So, I was vigorously salting down my slice, when I looked up. By their open-mouthed stares, you would have thought I was sitting there eating a turd sandwich. None of them had seen someone salt tehir wayer melon!

I cant eat melon without it!

bologna wrapped around sweet pickle relish, between saltines.
liverwurst on polish rye, but the important part is to really mash the bread.a little raw onion makes it perfect.

my dad put chili sauce on his eggs, always. hot stuff wasnt that easy to find in those days, so it was a late summer ritual to can up a bunch of tomatoes, and some chunky hot sauce. i got the job of pushing the hot peppers through the meat grinder on the back porch.

I saw a documentary on a one day of hell they put Freshmen through at the Naval Academy. They all know it's coming they just don't know when. They get rattled out of bed at like 2am and start. All day. Crazy team activities from physical to mental - like fixing a leaky PVC pipe set up.

From the days before Gatorade they've had mustard and water stations. From single servings of mustard they can take with them to people with squirt bottles that the freshman take on the fly.

No kidding I just got a cramp.

Anyway pickle juice works well on cramps too. That was the go to in the South before Gatorade.

I don't remember if our Mom made us eat that, or if I found out by accident when they got mixed on my plate.

But fresh hot corn stirred into cold applesauce is delicious. I like it best before the temps even out, so that the corn is still hot and the applesauce is still cold.

I also like butter on crackers. I started doing that at diners while waiting on the order. They usually had Captain Wafers and crackers for salads on the table, and butter.

And plain spaghetti with just salt and melted butter.

I heard people at work talking about pouring a bowl of Frito corn chips like cereal, then filling the bowl with buttermilk. Never tried it.

But Frito's and buttermilk is a totally new one.

As adventurous as I am, I have never managed to taste buttermilk by itself, like a drink. It just does not seem right.

But, Frito's and buttermilk could simulate corn chips and sour cream I suppose... nearly nachos...

As much as I love any chips and dip (corn chips, doritos, potato chips + sour cream/cottage cheese), the idea of eating it with a spoon is just... weird.

Not ruling out trying it someday though.

I think it's terrible plain. Whenever I make salad dressing or something that I have to buy a pint, I try it and still don't like it.

Mainly I eat chips to snack on while I'm driving, so I rarely have chips at home. I couldn't imagine how Fritos and buttermilk would be good, but what you said about chips and sour cream makes sense, so maybe that's the appeal. Next time I have Fritos, I'm gonna try to remember to save a few and try it when I have buttermilk.

(well, even poorer than I am now anyway) I would buy cheap dehydrated mashed potatoes in bulk bags and big bags of frozen store brand mixed veggies and make a dish I called White Trash Gumbo (I’ve since learned the error of that phrase, apologies to all) which was the veggies in enough water to cover and brought to a boil, then enough potatoes dumped in to soak up all the water. A glob of margarine and some salt and pepper and maybe a bit of garlic powder and I was good to go.

Young men without domestic training can end up a bit pathetic, I’m afraid.
