The ones that break into programming until you dismiss them? Or is that just a cable and broadcast thing?
I understand the value of the system but it's much louder than it needs to be and here around Chicago with the variety of weather patterns we have the thing goes off for everyone when the emergency is two counties away. They've also got an overly sensitive idea of what a "severe' thunderstorm is.

(34,139 posts)As well as the useless Amber alerts. What bugs me is that the Amber alerts I get seem to be state wide - but I am not sure since if I try to find more information, they do not show up on any web site I can find.
I get Amber alerts for the Miami area - I am outside of Tallahassee, so 500 miles away. Most of the time I am no where near a highway or anywhere an abducted child might be transported.
The only "cure" seems to be turning off all notifications on the phone, but then I don't get weather alerts which would be of use.

(25,183 posts)and check a weather app once or twice a day. You'll be made aware of coming weather events that could potentially impact you.

(34,139 posts)Where a severe thunderstorm can blow up in just an hour or so. For instance - the reason I did not see your message until this morning is that an intense little thunderstorm blew up east of me late last evening. It knocked the power out twice so I just didn't bother turning the computer back on.
If I'd been editing photos, it would have been a PITA to have that interruption and a warning would have been nice. The weather notifications - unlike the Amber notifications - seem to be targeted to location. But I can't figure out how to turn off one without turning off the other.

(25,183 posts)you do need to check a weather app several times a day. Our weather in SC seems a bit more predictable.

(19,847 posts)Maybe it was my previous phone but most all my other services and apps transferred over to the new one...

(34,139 posts)While the old one (cheap ZTE Tracfone version) did not allow selecting by app, this one (Smasung Lunapro for Tracfone) allows me to pick each app and turn it on and off. I've got two weather apps - one was on, the other off - but got no notification from them with the storm last night. But then, it was not marked by the National Weather Service as a severe storm so maybe that is what triggers an alert.

(17,650 posts)..but for me its fires wind and snow. And... i have about 4 apps that give me weather...the tv station apps (I chose Seattle stations) have a voice alert and most are very accurate and not too obnoxious.

(19,847 posts)They break by dialing down the program audio and with a little beeping while showing a little map and a scrolling description of the alert. Says Accuweather and doesn't prompt you to clear it or flip to the Weather Channel.
Nice.
The dog abides, too.
So I'm assuming there's at least no regulation requiring the cable channel to run such f**king loud break-ins.
