The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsWell, I'm laid up for two months.....
Doing a landscaping job for my boss Friday morning, I was shoveling mulch off the back of his truck, when I stepped back. The tail gate was off, and I missed the bumper step and went to the ground. Broke both bones in my lower right leg. After an ambulance ride, had surgery Saturday morning, got two steel rods in the bones, home today with a cast from toes to knee.Doc says no weight on the foot for six to eight weeks. No work, no driving, no paycheck until workman's comp comes through--dog knows how long that'll be. Not hurting for money--have enough emergency cushion for about 4-5 months if nothing serious comes up.
But it sure as hello wasn't the way I planned to spend this summer. Had my first real vacation in seven years coming next month, and now that's in the dumpster.
Well, I guess I'll be chattin' with y'all a bit more in the days ahead.......

It was a special international Scout event that has only been held in the US one other time, and probly won't be back here in my lifetime. There will be others (every four years), but not in this country. I'm not going overseas for it.

(25,917 posts)My limited experience with worker's comp is that it kicks in immediately, or very close to immediately. Different states may do it differently. Contact the worker's comp office or division or whatever it is in your state tomorrow. Make sure you understand what they require, who has to file what, and so on.
And take care of yourself. DO NOT try to rush anything. Don't put weight on that leg until your doc clears you. The last thing you want is that you try to do something sooner than you should and set yourself back or it never heals right.

(23,340 posts)Boss is really good about working with me on the worker's comp. Heck, we've been good friends for forty-plus years, and I know he'll bend over backward to be fair with me.

(25,917 posts)I know each state handles its own worker's comp, and so things may vary somewhat from state to state. Although I don't think an employer can stand in the way, it is very good to know your boss is fair and a friend as well. I think that as soon as paperwork is filed it should go through.
I've been on worker's comp at least once that I recall, and there was simply no interruption in my pay. This was more than 40 years ago and so I don't remember the details. I think there was some sort of difference in my take-home having to do with what kinds of taxes were actually taken out of the comp pay as compared to regular pay. In my case it was just one or two weeks I was out.
Take care and keep us informed as to what happens.

(23,809 posts)Spent 8 weeks in a foot to knee cast several years ago. It does get aggravating, but as I worked in an office, I went to work after a couple of weeks. Not a lot of fun. Keep the leg elevated. Mine would throb if I didnt. Good luck.
