(994 posts)Also the most aggravating, frustrating fur ball of unlimited energy in search of trouble and something to chew. I LOVE my lab dog. Thankfully his puppy hood is now a distant memory with only occasional flashbacks of the chaos and hell created by his presence. He is still a pill, but with lots of work on my part - and his - Zeus is now a pretty good canine citizen. But I know I am not up for another lab puppy.

(12,860 posts)And sadly slowing down his hind leg vet has him on medicine. If I went and looked at the chocolate lab pup Id take him so I have no resistance and I wont go and look.

(994 posts)Zeus will be 9 in September and yes is slowing down somewhat but fortunately is still very healthy. But I know that will not last - the enevitable always rears its ugly head.
I know exactly what you mean by no resistance. There is just something about a lab pup. I know if someone came to me with a sad story about a lab pup who desperatly needed a home, I'd be mush even though my head would be screaming No! No! No!
And they are being very selective in who gets a pup they rescued momma and they know me well she does from work. Im like if we come over were coming home with a puppy ,Because we all have no willpower just say No that would not happen.

(17,984 posts)Don't know what is up exactly with the Boog's leg, but have you asked if a brace would help? It would mean more time spent on Boog Shit Island!

(17,984 posts)I could hold my own on Boog Shit Island! Of course, with two dogs to play with, I don't know how much fishing I would get done.
Branching into fly fishing I always been spin cast ultra light or medium gear and yes my dear friend we probably would not get any fishing done with millie and boog and we would take any advice on fly fishing

(17,984 posts)St Croix makes some decent rods that are cheap, like $150 each. I believe they have a lifetime warranty too. I can't remember the name of the website I went to to trade my salt water gear for a four weight, but you could google around. The one thing you have to remember is to find a rod with a lifetime warranty, and if it's used, make sure that warranty is transferable. I suspect you are going to want something around seven or eight weight for throwing larger flies. Are you fishing in any salt or brackish water? If so, then you have to get a salt water reel. If you are fishing in freshwater, then you can find a cheapo reel. You'll also need to ask around and find out about lines. Do you want a floating line or a semi-sinking line? The final part of the equation is the fly selection. You're probably going to go into the fly store and drop $50 on a handful of flies that you will lose immediately. That's why you should become friends with someone who ties flies... Seriously, though, those damned flies like to get hung up in the trees when casting and on debris in the water.
My best advice is to go into the local fly shop and start talking. Find out what everyone else uses for rod weight, lines, and flies. Then try to piece together a cheap outfit. Shoot, you could just have a single fly outfit and see if which of you three actually want to pursue it. How much crap do the boys have to muck out to buy a fly fishing outfit? Now that's a good applied math problem!

(17,984 posts)Didn't have anywhere to fish, so my friend and I went to the little canal that ran alongside the street. I caught a four inch pan fish of some sort and was extremely proud. I think I kept it in a bucket of water for a day before releasing it. What it was doing in the little canal is still a mystery!
Hell, I'm convinced you could catch fish with a string tied on your big toe and a piece of bacon on the hook. The rest is just doo dads to make you feel like you're really serious. Fish are too stupid to know if you are using the old toe method or the latest $5000 bamboo rod.

(17,622 posts)..our old rescue was about 9 she became very arthritic. Rimadyl can really be hard on a dogs kidneys. so hubby, being a pharmacist, researched it and we asked the vet to prescribe our dog Etodolac. Its a human med and can be used on dogs. My Vet hadnt heard of it..its not widely known. However, pet med sells it on their site now! It was so much cheaper than Rimadyl but now its been incorporated into dog-dome and is pricey but still has fewer side effects.
Another thing to check out is shock wave therapy. Its a non intrusive non drug therapy that was used on race horses to combat lameness. Our vet bought his own machine to use on the horses in the county and he tried it on our Golden ( free)..with great success! The dog needs to be sedated and shock wave is used on the effected area..i dunno..paddles or something....and the vet recommends 2-3 (@ about 200$ each) sessions and our dog really seemed to be better. Of course he died shorty afterwards at age 7 of cancer
