Did anyone watch "Hemmingway and Gellhorn" last night on HBO? ***SPOILERS***

It was an interesting story but I'll definately have to watch it again. It was about the relationship between Ernest Hemmingway and Martha Gellhorn. For those of you who don't know who Martha Gellhorn was she was probably one of the greatest war correspondants of all time, pretty hefty title knowing that much of her reporting was done during an era when women were not really welcomed on the battle field (she report from Spanish Revolution thru the Vietnam War). The irony of this couple was that Hemmingway was a real 'macho' style man and Gellhorn was not exactly the type of woman that could last long in a relation ship with someone like Hemmingway. Sure, I could see the 2 hooking up but eventually they married which was the downfall of their relationship - Hemmingway wanted a stay-at-home wife, something that Gellhorn could never be.

I thought the casting was done pretty well. I have to admit even I was a attracted to Clive Owen's Hemming way and it paired nicely with Nicole Kidman's Gellhorn. They had some amazing casting including Lars Ulrich as the Danish movie director of 'The Spanish Earth' (the film that Hemmingway help put together during the Spanish Revoluntion).

I sometimes wish I had closed captioning because I felt I missed some dialogue over some of the bad accents in the movie, even the American accents done by English Owens and Australian Kidman. I loved the details put into the buildup to the Hemmingway/Gellhorn relationship during the backdrop of the Spanish Revolution. That alone made it a decent movie to watch. The problem with the movie was probably similiar to the relationship between Hemmingway & Gellhorn - after committing the whole thing went kinda downhill from there until the end you just were ready to walk away. That's how Hemmingway & Gellhorn the couple worked out and honestly, that's how I felt by the end of the movie. You had this great first act of the movie but after that it went downhill - the Spanish Revolution took up about half of the movie and then Russia invading Finland, Japan Bombing China and D-Day were all squeezed into the 2nd half of the movie. You'd think it would be a pivotal moment when Gellhorn was one of the first reporters at Dachu Concentration Camp but that scene lasted a boring 2 minutes.

The movie is probably worth watching at least once but HBO did a great disservice with this movie by making just a 2.5hr movie instead of creating a mini-series where they could have expanded some of the later wars. However, I do predict plenty of Emmy/Golden Globe nominations where Ms. Kidman will score her first Emmy win. The Emmy's just love HBO movies featuring talented motion picture actresses - they were jackpots for Drew Barrymore and Kate Winslet, I expect the same for Kidman.

...but Clive Owen isn't good looking enough to convince me he's Hemingway. Ernest, whatever his faults, was possibly the most gorgeous man who ever lived. And I really like Clive Owen.

And, of course, Ernie's personal life wasn't particularly inspiring, imo.
So anyway, I didn't watch.

I don't get that. What pictures of Hemingway are you referring to?

I just googled "Ernest Hemingway images" and found pics of all vintages....including some very very handsome young ones...
And not so shabby older ones too.. I'm sorry, I haven't a clue how to put a pic on this post... so maybe if you google the phrase you'll see what I mean. If not...well, chacun a son gout. (May well be the only French I know...and I'm probably misspelling it.)

His granddaughters Mariel and Margaux looked very much like him...

And I am not sure I can agree with you. But to each his own.. if I knew how to post pictures, I would.. I tried.. but to no avail.

I think he resembles a young Orson Welles, actually, which is not bad at all.. but certainly not someone I would call 'gorgeous' at least to my way of thinking.

I haven't seen that much over-the-top acting from well-known actors in a long time. Ham city. It wasn't boring, though, it moved right along. Great locations and all.

The other strange part was the cheezy digital effects dropping our heros into vintage footage that was very poorly done. Fake, fake, fake. It was as if this couple was important because of where they were, which were all important historical events.

The writing was pretty awful. Hemingway was such a caricature of a hyper-macho, brawling, hard-drinking man. Why was he famous? Hard to tell from this movie. There was little explanation of the issues in the Spanish Civil War, there was little explanation of their relationship, most of the friends and hangers-on were cartoons. Much emoting, little explanation.

I expect better from the director of "The Incredible Lightness of Being". But he is making TV movies now ...
