(62,444 posts)Turtles are one of the very few animals who are not fast enough to run away when kids approach them.

(14,961 posts)they were named Mickey and Minnie. My son had just got his, she had hers for 6 yrs., we had an outdoor pond. They were put in the pond one night before, it rained and wouldn't you know her turtle is the one who somehow escaped. This was 5 yrs ago, we looked everywhere that night in the rain. She was completely devastated. I felt so terrible. We looked for days after, we have a pond at the end of our street, I like to think he ended up there. Everytime I see a story about a turtle I still feel guilty, that girl truly loved him.

(115,858 posts)My first pets were a pair of red-eared sliders I named Myrtle and Fertile, and as an adult I had a box turtle for awhile. Cats are more emotionally satisfying and cuddlier pets, but I do like turtles. Just this last weekend I was delighted to have seen three eastern spiny softshell turtles basking on logs in the Mississippi River. Made my day.

(300 posts)When I was young, turtles were sold out of pet departments in larger stores. They were one step up from the goldfish that my parents initially allowed me to have as a "starter pet." Turtles are somewhat homely but cute at the same time, and with the ability to retract into their shells they may remind kids of "Transformers."
