Rutherford Birchard Hayes (October 4, 1822 – January 17, 1893) was the 19th president of the United States from 1877 to 1881, having served also as an American representative and governor of Ohio. Hayes was a lawyer and staunch abolitionist who defended refugee slaves in court proceedings in the antebellum years.

The republicans today would call him a socialist.

They just don't make 'em like that anymore!

On edit: Even though he ran as a republican, by today's standards he would be considered a liberal. "Hayes believed in meritocratic government and equal treatment without regard to wealth, social standing or race."

Most men from that era usually look like they are from that era, but he could give any Hollywood heartthrob today a run for his money.
