Skunks in the city?

I was trying to drift off when I woke up to a very strong skunk smell here in the middle of Boston. I know the smell because I grew up in upstate NY and we would often have skunk incidents. I have never seen a skunk here in the middle of the city, and as far as I know, they generally aren't around these parts.

I am wondering if the skunk was looking for food and where it came from. I am assuming it was either hit by a car or frightened by a person or another animal. This is the first time I have ever smelled a skunk since I have lived in a city, which is about 35 years. Just thought it was unusual.

This was a very pungent skunk smell. And I am using AC. Don't even have my windows open.

I know skunk all too well, myself. I am out west and all kinds of wildlife exists in the city, including skunks. wouldn't surprise me at all in Boston.

I guess it's possible. Particularly since I have never, ever seen a skunk in the city. Rabbits, rats, mice, yes. Skunks, never. If it's weed, that is some pretty skunky weed.

This summer I have smelled that distinctive skunk odor over and over in NC and TN -- far more than I can ever remember. I believe there are probably a lot more skunks around than usual. Might be from the mild winters.

Don't know what some of you are smoking, but this odor is definitely from skunks. My friend's dogs had a close encounter and still have a lingering smell after several weeks and multiple baths. The professional groomers are swamped by demand.

That would be what I would look for first due to potential danger.

If it is skunk odor, I remember when one gets ran over by a car, the smell can spread over quite an area.

More likely dogs got after one and pissed it off. No fun for the dog's owner.......

Skunks are all over East Boston. I used to pass them on the sidewalk on my way home from the T. They were pretty docile and as long as you didn’t mess with them you would be ok. I just made sure to pay attention to any critters that I saw along the way. My landlord’s dog got into it with one and that was a big stink to say the least. The skunks up there are tiny compared to the ones in rural areas. At least the ones in Florida were much larger and the smell far worse. Anyway, watch your step and good luck up there!

The critters can live anywhere they can make a den and find food and skunky-love.

Or it could've been tRump supporters--the odor isn't much different, but I prefer the skunks.

And the storm drains are their freeways to move around, mostly undetected. Only the raccoon is better adapted to urban living. Opossums come in third, only because they are, well, slow, and don't deal well with dogs.
