(The Journal of Mineral Science) Physicists and geologists alike were excited recently at the discovery of a "new" form of magnetic mineral found in a deep chasm in New Mexico following an earthquake on August 14 of this year.
The iron-rich mineral is unusual in that it demonstrates various magnetic states. Unlike conventional dipole magnets, with a distinct "north" and "south" pole, this new substance varies polarity at different times, in effect having multiple poles.
Controversy arose when the United States Geological Survey denied mining permits to men, so that only women will be allowed to extract the material from the new rift in the earth.
In a brief statement on Thursday, the USGS justified the decision on the grounds that men can't have multi-pole ore chasms.
