use a nail grinder for dogs... they work wonders and there is little chance of injury to the quick... get one that doesn't make a lot of noise and have someone distract the pooch while you work on the nails.

acquired a pit bull pup to save her from being put down. She sure wasn't a dog I would have ever chosen, but she is as sweet and gentle as any dog I've ever owned.
