The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsOK...this is strange. Last night, I commented in Facebook about "pocket" air conditioners...
...the ones that will cool off a single person, or an small area of the room, instead of a whole room. The post was in the context of a discussion of ACs of the future, and how the world will--or will not--keep cool in the warmer world of the future. Just another Facebook comment, OK? Now--today, I come onto good old DU, and what do I find when I hit "DU Lounge"...but ads for pocket air conditioners, up at the top of my screen? I guess I knew in some sense that this sort of thing was happening...but it's a little spooky, all the same. Good old Facebook...

Firefox has the capability to indicate the trackers and automatically turn tracking off.

Within days, FB which knows I am male, started hitting me with ads for clothing which works well "for large breasted women."
The creepiest ones are the ones triggered by your phone listening to you!
>>With this in mind, I decided to try an experiment. Twice a day for five days, I tried saying a bunch of phrases that could theoretically be used as triggers. Phrases like Im thinking about going back to uni and I need some cheap shirts for work. Then I carefully monitored the sponsored posts on Facebook for any changes.
The changes came literally overnight. Suddenly I was being told mid-semester courses at various universities, and how certain brands were offering cheap clothing. A private conversation with a friend about how Id run out of data led to an ad about cheap 20 GB data plans. And although they were all good deals, the whole thing was eye-opening and utterly terrifying.<<

(4,509 posts)EVERY. DAY. I report 6-10 ads for churches in my FB feed as offensive. If they tracked me at all they would know I was an Atheist. A few times a week I have to report ads from some MAGAt PAC, even though there is no denying I am a liberal. I have no children, I consistently receive ads for children's products. Honestly if their mojo worked, I would like it better.

I was looking for instructions for a project, and found a YouTube video that was thorough. It was in Spanish, and I do not speak Spanish, but the process filmed was self explanatory.
Now I get pop ups, banner ads, Facebook ads, and the occasional spam email, all in Spanish.

(3,473 posts)Today I saw a recruitment ad on FB for the DEA. I may have also Googled Narcos to look it up on IMDB. It did seem a little strange. I've never seen such an ad before. I didn't even think they are the kind of agency that would put recruitment ads on FB.
