Grand Rapids unveils 3D-painted crosswalk (it's not really 3D but looks that way)

The city of Grand Rapids is trying something new to help ensure drivers yield at crosswalks.

The city posted a picture of its new 3D-painted crosswalk at Pokegama Avenue and Ninth Street N.

The caption read, "Please yield to pedestrians in crosswalks. Especially when the crosswalk is elevated! Check out the new 3D crosswalk on Pokegama Avenue and 9th Street North."

The optical illusion is being used in the hopes that it'll help keep pedestrians safe.

Short article, no more at link

If I didn't know it was an optical illusion, I'd be worried about one of those sharp corners puncturing my tires!

I can imagine the rear endings when people slam on the brakes seeing that. TreasonousBastard Sep 2019 #3

Not to worry. Once the white get run over with black tire scuffs the illusion won't be as stark. brush Sep 2019 #5

Might cause some drivers to question their sanity (and brakes).

People are going to be slamming on their breaks even when no one is in the crosswalk, causing rear end accidents. They need to come up with a better solution.
