"I was a pilot for thirty years, and I couldn't figure out how to set that fucking watch!"

Had the battery replaced in my watch today. When the jeweler handed it to me he said he had no idea how to set the time and date. Another customer at the counter told me he once had the same make and model. I said “it is a pain in the ass to adjust”. His response is the OP!

I'd usually have to get the instruction book from the net - especially with older timepieces. Firestorm49 Sep 2019 #1

every watch I've ever had, mechanical, digital... has malfunctioned within weeks of me wearing it. It was starting to weird me out. Stopped or losing time constantly. I swear there are no metal implants in my wrists or odd electrical or magnetic fields (that I know of).

Maybe I really am an alien! LOL

Turned out, wearing them at work was the culprit. He was an assembly line worker for General Motors, and the magnetic fields from all the high-powered assembly machinery was magnetizing his watch movements/hands/whatever--they never kept accurate time when he wore them at work. But when he'd let me wear them, they kept excellent time!

as a young Marine fresh out of tech school, I bought a new Seiko watch. Cost me $90, 90 1972 dollars.

Well, I worked in radar, and for most of my young life I had worn cheap Timexes from Sears. Had never really had a problem with them, I just wanted a new flashy Seiko watch. Well, I found that when I wore the watch at work, the magnetron in our transmitter absolutely froze it. Stopped for several days. Eventually started working again, but at work again it just stopped.

I went back to the Timex. Seems the cheaper materials were not affected by the magnetron. Go figure. Somewhere along the way I lost track of that expensive Seiko and never spent more than $35 on a watch again.

I stopped wearing a watch a few years ago when I got a temp job in a wearhouse. No jewelry around the conveyors and stuff. Now I just check my cell phone.

He thought that maybe he had some kind of weird field that made them break.

I have a love-hate relationship with my digital watch. I love the information it can give me, but eventually it has an electronic spasm and reverts to thinking that it's January 1st. Resetting almost any digital or hybrid watch is a royal pain as well...
